5. Skates don't run well in subzero temps.
I learned that once when I was 10 years old and one of my buddy's parents, tired of my buddy underfoot in the house, dropped us at an skating rink on a park lagoon about a mile and a half from home. She promised to come back in a couple of hours. We concluded skates don't glide at -15 in short order. The walk home was cold.

17. huh - skates actually melt the ice as they move, don't they?
from pressure or friction or something? maybe when it's that cold it refreezes too fast!

29. Yes, that's true and it's why when its really cold they don't glide.
50 years ago every kid in the upper midwest knew that.

Now REALLY cold is when the processor in a kid's MP3 player becomes superconductive!

61. Winter in Minnesota without power.
Just had the power turned back on after hours of no power. That's a relief. Last winter the heat was off for 9 hours in sub-zero weather. Our main heat is a propane furnace that needs electricity. Our back-up heat is electric baseboard. Our back-up back-up is a fancy woodstove in the basement that would heat the whole place if we still used firewood. We don't anymore.

Response tonight: 3-1/2 hours. Barely a chill indoors. Candles and flashlights were handy this time :-)

The house is pretty chilly right now, because SoCal homes weren't big on insulation when this one was built 40 years ago, and it also has two sliding glass doors and a couple of skylights.

How we suffer here on the Central Coast.

Edited on Fri Jan-16-09 12:47 AM by Blue_In_AK
it is now 39 degrees at 8:43 p.m. We got a Chinook wind a couple of days ago, and the temperatures went from -30 to 45 above in about 36 hours.

During our cold snap, most of the national cross-country ski races being held here had to be cancelled because the temperature wouldn't get above -4 which was their cutoff.
