I just dashed off this LTTE:
In his farewell speech tonight President Bush remarked that "Above all, I thank the American people for the trust they have given me." Instead of thanking us he should have asked forgiveness, having betrayed the trust placed in him after the attacks of Sept 11, 2001. This president exploited that national tragedy and the fear, anger, and patriotism of the American people to implement a predetermined agenda for invading a country that had nothing to do with the attacks and did not pose the "grave and gathering threat" he misled so many to believe. His statements regarding an alleged alliance between Iraq and al Qaeda and the spectre of "mushroom clouds" were unsupported -- and in fact contradicted -- by the available intelligence.
The result has been even greater tragedy for the families of our soldiers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty, and for our country as a whole.
George W. Bush can try to spin his legacy just as he spun and prevaricated throughout his presidency, but the vast majority of Americans can see the damage done, the opportunities lost, and the trust betrayed.
