Homeless people to be removed ahead of Obama inauguration
Homeless people living in downtown Washington will be moved to the city's outskirts ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, it has emerged.

As part of a security plan, buses will be making one-way trips from the region around the Capitol building to large shelters further away from the centre.

Charity Coalition for the Homeless said today that they would monitor the situation to make sure homeless people were not being barred from attending the celebrations.

Those affected by the inaugural measures will be accommodated in large shelters away from the centre from where they can watch the proceedings on television. But they will entitled to a line up and attend Tuesday's events, city officials have said.

But it will inevitably lead to upheaval for those who have made the streets in downtown Washington there home.

2. Given how cold it is here
and the sheer numbers of people that we're expecting, moving the homeless into shelters is probably the best thing for them.

6. I've visited some of these folks
You can find a lot of them huddled in the entrance of the federal buildings along Pennsylvania avenue. It is better that they get a warm place to sleep. They do sometimes lose their carts and bags. Sometimes the folks who stay look after them. They're under the bridges, too . . .

4. Yeah, I'm sure there's no
room for outrage here. Good that Obama admin is coming in and getting inaugurated so they can help the homeless if they want it.

I've known of homeless people who do not want to live inside.

7. They're tough ones and some who are just out of it
I think many do want their independence from the shelter's rules and curfew. Also, the folks usually have a lot of belongings that can't be accommodated. This isn't going to be pretty for those folks. I hope they have some good outreach workers to help. I know, from experience, there are usually a lot of familiar faces who know enough of the others . . . I've seen a lot of care for each other, at times, among the folks I've shared a bottle with, from time to time.

9. Yeah, I hope the best
for them..I was there for awhile in California. If you have to be homeless that's the place to be.

8. The amount of homelessness in DC is so sad.
I am always amazed how many homeless people there are wandering around Downtown DC and sleeping in the parks. I thought the situation in Philly was bad, but DC is easily 5 times worse. It is very sad that so many people in our nations capital city are so invisible to the government around the corner.
