Miracle on the Hudson happened thanks to the skill and dedication of union workers (X post)

Please note airlines are trying to get rid of older pilots that make more. This is a great reason to keep the experienced pilots where they belong, in the pilots seat!

Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, III, the pilot credited with landing US Airways flight 1549 gently on the Hudson River is a veteran of 40 years. The “miracle on the Hudson” is really a result of professional pilots organizing to ensure that they get the best support and training at the highest standards in the industry. Captain Sullenberger is a former safety chairman, accident investigator and national committee member for the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA). His ALPA safety work led to the development of a Federal Aviation (FAA) Advisory Circular.
The next time you see the scurrilous advertising by the opponents of the Employee Free Choice Act, remember they are insulting union members like Captain Sullenberger. From the pilots, to the flight attendants to the members of the FDNY, the “miracle on the Hudson” happened thanks to the skill and dedication of union workers.

9. i'm pretty sure the pilot, himself, landed that plane...
i love this idea that everyone that belongs to a union is the most perfect, the most competent, the most wonderful worker...

bullshit...

there are as many fuckups that belong to unions as there are the perfect. most fall in between. being in a union just means you are in a union, nothing more.

so ascribing these monumental gifts as a professional to union membership is just bullshit.

and anyone that says otherwise is lying. protecting. i get it. just drop your "holier than thou" crap. y'all are no worse than fundamentalist christians when you try to play that card.

unions had a purpose, served that purpose, and now are almost all about the money. deny that...

10. Unions still have a purpose, serve that purpose, and
mostly do it very well. I've worked in management and supervised union people and they're damned good people. They were the best trained people and I always knew that they knew what they were doing.

Unions have had problems, but no more or less than any other organization. They're also scapegoats far more than any other organization. A whole lot of the corruption you hear about is PR campaigns from union busting corporations.

We need more unions, and we need unions to have a big resurgence in power. But we need those unions to have more transparency and democracy from the ground up.

14. thomcat, we agree more than we disagree...
it was wrong of me to state in my first post that unions had nothing to do with what happened today. just as it was wrong for the op to state that unions had everything to do with what happened today.

what happened today was the result of the incredible actions, in a matter of minutes of thinking, of one or maybe two pilots and the cabin crew and passengers (we don't know at this point), a lot of luck (making a perfect landing in water, almost impossible), and the fact of putting the plane down in a place where dozens of vessels could get to the plane in a matter of minutes (when does that ever happen?)

it was a miracle. not some religious thing. it was a miracle. a combination of all of the exact right elements at the exact right time to produce the perfect result. THAT! was the miracle.

it's not a union thing. that was my upset at the original post.

it was a triumph of humanity. it was all of these special circumstances that allowed all of these people get to live another day...

and the fact that the op chose at this time to promote his own union agenda disgusted me.

that's all...

16. It is total bullcrap that unions are all about the money.
They serve a useful purpose in making it difficult for management to shove crap down the workers throats. To provide a safer and fairer working place for employees. To provide an increase of workers that know their job and with fewer turnovers because of unfair firings.

They serve a useful purpose to local communities with their volunteers and contributions to local charities.

18. You're absolutely right
This would have been just as effective with a bunch of poorly trained temp workers with GEDs working for minimum wage -- sort of like the TSA people who can't find their asses with both hands and a flashlight.

:sarcasm:

5. My youngest just flew into Maryland this morning, and then drove
into Washington. She was to meet others from another flight that was canceled because of this plan crash. Don't know how many travelers on their way to D.C. were re-routed today. But we know of at least one plane. When I saw this I just felt queasy. But they are so right in calling this a Miracle, and you are so right about why keeping experienced workers is important.

8. Did you all know USAIR took the pilots' retirements away? No coverage on that on TV
I for one hope this event puts the spotlight on the tragedy that has befallen the pilot profession.

Airline management always sees a way to reward themselves and cut the union worker's wages.

Anybody wonder why most pilots have second jobs or businesses? That's why.
