Would You Go to Camp David Next Weekend if You Were the New Prez?
We know that this will be a WORKING President. When he goes there, he will be having a working weekend and Mrs. O, the girls and the first Mother-in Law will be there for enjoyment.

On the one hand, President Obama won't want to send the message that he will continue bush's "legacy" as the vacationer in chief. You also know that the right wing media and talking heads will be ALL READY to jump on him if he does.

On the other hand, the righties will jump on him for ANYTHING, so their opinions are irrelevant. Also the family (and if I were a new President, me too!) will be dying to see the historical place that will be theirs for 4 (please God 8) years. I think I'd take a whole lot of reading and have several phone lines open and take the family for a couple days of quiet after the hoorah of the first week.

Of course, it may take a while to get the stench of bushes out before the Obamas can enjoy the environment.

What do you think?

4. That's what I was thinking.
One thing that I admire about the Obamas is the factg that being PARENTS to 2 great kids is their most important job.

They do it very well. I love how the girls are still little girls after the rigors of a presidential campaign.

2. I would like to see President Obama head for New Orleans.
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 11:54 PM by Old Crusoe
I understand that presidents need retreats, and I'm not questioning that, but what a deep impact it would have if on his first available weekend as the new president he and his family headed to New Orleans -- to re-establish diplomatic relations.

To say: "You are valued citizens and I'm here to help."

3. They will have had several moving around place to place
experiences in recent weeks, perhaps they will just want to stay put the first weekend.

23. Precisely. They should have a "pizza and movies" weekend as a family. Relax. Settle in.
Unless they're yearning for some winter sports after Hawaii, they can wait until the warmer weather for Camp David ... and take the new puppy!

7. No.
It would send the wrong message.

Camp David isn't going anywhere.

13. If he is as good at sending the right message as President...
...as he was as a candidate, he'll certainly make the right choice.

9. I've read he and his team will be burning the midnight oil for awhile,
including weekends. Lots of crises to take care of, so I don't think he'll be going for awhile. Unless he brings staff with him.

14. Either that...
...or sending the family to get away while President Dad works.

He is the type of man who will be refreshed by knowing that his family has had a good time.

19. Right
He's gonna be working a short week, don't forget - he doesn't start until Wednesday. And it's not like he and his administration don't have a whole world to clean up.

Plus, the girls are still settling in at their new school, so whatever they have planned on weekends with their new friends should take precedence over Camp David - which is a place really for grownups. It's so isolated. Those little girls, I suspect, will keep their parents in town most weekends.

Besides, DC is a great city. So much to see and do here.

21. And those kids are really little
Seven and ten are little.

Plus, he's been away from them so much for the past two years.

But, I read today that they're now staying at Blair House. That pleases me. And their move from the Hay Adams was made with absolutely NO fanfare.

Class act, all the way, the Obama family.

12. I hope he spends LOTS of time at Camp David, so the White House can be opened for tours again.
Clinton used to let tours come in AFTER the regular tour hours--he pointed out that it wasn't his house, it was the people's and he was just living in some of the world's best public housing.

It's an easy helo ride for anyone who needs to meet him, security is superb, and he's away from the hustle and bustle. I hope he spends every weekend there. It's good for the sanity, too.
