D'j'ever see 49 Republican heads explode in unison? You 'r' gonna LUV this!!!!
This is just a whole lot of awesomeness. Long story short, Tennesse Democrats decided to mess around with state Republicans and voted to elect the first GOP speaker of the statehouse in almost forty years. Watch the frantic elephant stampede in all it's glory above and read all the pissypants quotes below.

Tennessean:

New Tennessee Speaker of the House Kent Williams "lied" to fellow Republicans Tuesday by ignoring the party's choice for the job and joining with 49 Democrats in voting for himself, new state Rep. Joe Carr said.

"There is history in Tennessee politics for this kind of shenanigans," Carr, a newly elected Republican from the Lascassas community northeast of Murfreesboro, said during a phone interview.

Carr was one of 49 Republicans voting in the minority for Rep. Jason Mumpower of Bristol to be the next speaker.

"I don't think we should be surprised," he said of the vote. "What caught us off guard is that someone went back on their word. Then he votes for himself to do the very thing he said he wouldn't do, which is self-serving politics."

1. lol... Dems pwned Repubs
Edited on Fri Jan-16-09 05:55 AM by radfringe
Looks to me the dems were faced with having a repub speaker - by voting in unison for Williams, they pulled the rug out from under the repubs, and got someone they felt they could live with for the time being.

the news report also mentioned that Williams expects to be kicked out of the repub party - if that happens will he go "independent" and caucus with Dems thus giving them the majority again? ennywhooo-if the repubs do kick Williams out - isn't this a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face?

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

ON EDIT: Reid and Pelosi should take a few lessons from this

18. If it is, we're only headed back the way we've already come.
On May 22, 1856, Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts was sitting at his writing desk on the Senate floor when he was confronted by South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks and a couple of other Southern goons-cum-Members of Congress.

Brooks complained of a recent speech on slavery by Sumner, then proceeded to beat him with a gold-handled cane while one of his associates held off other Members of Congress by gunpoint. Brooks ripped Sumner's desk out of the floor, beat Sumner unconscious, and continued to beat him until his cane broke.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Southern_Chivalry.jpg

Brooks died in 1857, but his gun-toting accomplice, Laurence M. Keitt, started yet another brawl on the floor of the House in 1860, then had the good grace allow himself to be mortally wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor in 1864.

As was usually the case before the ideological role-reversal of the 20th Century, the bad guys in this story were all Democrats.

21. Are you kidding?
I'd be THRILLED to see that kind of passion from our elected Democratic leadership, rather than them lying down and dying in back rooms.

All that happened days, weeks, MONTHS ago (or it feels like it). This happened, what, Monday? What have the GOP wrought since they were caught with their pants down?
