ACLU: Schools can’t ban Obama
The head of the ACLU of Louisiana sent a letter Wednesday to school superintendents across the state warning them not to halt student discussion about President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration Tuesday.
The letter was prompted by reports of students punished after Election Day for talking about the outcome of the election, said Marjorie R. Esman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana.
“We know of incidents in the Bossier City area and in St. Tammany Parish,” Esman said Wednesday.
The letter advises that since this is the inauguration of the “first president of African descent, many students and school personnel will be excited, others will be less so — as is always a consequence of the election process.”
According to an article in The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune, a 14-year-old black girl at Slidell Junior High School said one of her teachers told students if they talked about the election, they would be disciplined.
In the same article, a black parent of a 7-year-old boy said her son was forced to stand along a playground wall after he shouted, “Obama won.”
