Man killed old friend when battling a 'ghost'

>KUALA LUMPUR: An elderly man was acquitted by the High Court yesterday of murder on the grounds of insanity. High Court judge Datuk Mohamed Apandi Ali, however, ordered Loo Sek Kam, 58, to be sent to Hospital Bahagia in Hulu Kinta, Perak, and kept there at the ruler's pleasure.

"The accused committed the offence as stated in the charge but, by reason of unsoundness of his mind and the fact he was not aware that his act was wrong, he is acquitted and discharged."

Apandi then ordered Loo to be placed "in safe custody at the hospital".

Loo was charged with murdering Chen Seong, then aged 97, at a nursing home in Kepong Baru, Kepong, at 8.30pm on March 23, 2006.

When he was first charged in July 2007, the High Court was told that Loo had woken up from his sleep and thought he saw a ghost.
