In Fairbanks, Alaska, where it stayed at about 45 below zero last week for days .. it's almost 50 today. :wtf:

It just hit around 41 here in Arlington, TX. It has been cold allllllll day.

On edit: 41 isn't cold but it started out at 21 and didn't get to 40 until an hour or so ago. That is cold for here!

That is brutal for us. Rarely in my life have I seen temps below 10.

It is bizarre what happened in Alaska, they had to close schools because it got too WARM! The snow melted ans refroze, making the place an ice rink.

13. This is the third straight day of closed schools here.

The roads are treacherous as hell, with the deep freeze underneath and about 1/2 inch of water on top. Also winds gusting to 80 mph + in some parts of town.

I assumed you lived in AK based on your posting. I'd love to live up there, but between the frigid temps and total darkness in the winter I just don't know if I could really handle it. Even more so because I wouldn't want to share the same state with Palin; that loser!

it's not totally dark here in the winter. Here in Anchorage, we still have about five hours of daylight on December 21, and the beautiful long days in the summer definitely make up for it.

Ouch!! That's tough to deal with. I have a hard time when we lose an hour and it starts getting light at 6am and dark at 5-5:30pm...

But, as I've said before, I've never been up there to experience it for myself so I can't really say much other than how hard it must be. I've told my wife a few times that I'd like to get up there and she's always really down on the idea for the fact of the cold... I'll just have to surprise her one day!! :)

preferably in the summer. Last summer was kind of cold and gray, but this year is predicted to be much better. My favorite month of the year is September -- far fewer tourists, the weather is usually fairly decent, and the colors are great. You might consider a fall vacation. :)

8. It was 51 here in Anchorage when I first got up this morning.

Last I checked it was 43. Some places here in Alaska went from -40 to +40 in about 36 hours courtesy of the "Pineapple Express," or our yearly January hurricane (i.e., Chinook). :) We've had winds clocked at 122 mph at Alyeska Ski Resort in the past day.

15. I didn't realize the Pineapple Express extended so far north.

Naturally, here in California, we occasionally get that warm, heavy rain pattern blowing in from the Hawaiian Islands.

But it generally only occurs during El Nino and means for some heavy flooding.

and it always follows those deep, deep freezes. It's pouring rain here right now. Portage Valley south of Anchorage got over six inches of rain yesterday.

14. Sun came out for a little bit this afternoon and it zoomed up to 8, then the wind picked up.

Sun's going down now and the temperature is plumeting again. We're burnin' wood like a fuggin' locomotive but its supposed to warm up to the mid 20's tomorrow. That would be nice except then its supposed to start snowing again.
