4. LOL @ Adbot
When I clicked through that -- hadn't seen it before -- both ads were for The Objective Standard with a big "Ayn Rand's Ideas Applied!" headline LOL

7. I think that Ayn Rand was a good novelist and a lousy philosopher
When I initially read "The Fountainhead," and "Atlas Shrugged," I felt they were novels written by a woman who could weave a good story, but had a "pure Aryan" philosophy. (Strange for a woman who was born into Communism and had a life-long hatred for it.)

I really don't know how many people here on DU actually read her two most famous books, "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged." But they were well written works of fiction. And not only that, she was a good enough writer to make you actually identify with her main characters.

However, there was a problem with her philosophy. It was that she portrayed her main characters as brilliant human beings, while caricaturing everyone else as leeches living off the "brilliance" of her "ubermenschen" (German for supermen. Not the comic book character, but "superior human beings").

So Ms. Rand presented a world view in which people were either geniuses, or leeches.

Ummm, Ayn (and those of you who buy into her "world view") planet Earth is made up of human beings. Some are decent. Some suck. Most just try to survive.

But breaking human beings down between geniuses and leeches? ... Sorry, Ayn, that philosophy is so incredibly fucked up as to require psychological help.
