CT mom accused of drunken breastfeeding

HARTFORD, CT (CNN) - Police in Connecticut are accusing a mother of taking her three-week old daughter to a bar, drinking and then later breast feeding while she drank more.

Police say Allanah Earley, 36, left a bar drunk and stumbled down the street in the cold with the infant.

She eventually made it to a friend's house where she continued drinking and began breast feeding.

Bar patrons contacted the police.

Breast-Feeding and Smoking

The study authors noted that nicotine has not been considered contraindicated during breast-feeding since a policy revision in 2001. Many parents are generally aware of the benefits of breast-feeding and the dangers of smoking, but this study sought to learn more about the interplay of 2 forces -- the desire to breast-feed and the desire to smoke -- in the breast-feeding decisions that women make.

The study authors enrolled women over a 1-year period during 2005-2006 at a large, urban medical center. The sample was 63% black, 33% white, and was predominantly publicly insured. The data were collected as a convenience sample of self-administered surveys when mothers of infants < 13 months old presented for care at the study authors' medical center. Mothers responded to a 24-item questionnaire that sought to determine maternal knowledge about nicotine and smoking in relationship to breast-feeding, attitude toward smoking or using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) during nursing, information on why the mother started or stopped breast-feeding (because of smoking) or smoking (because of wanting to breast-feed), and whether smoking affected decisions to breast-feed.

The survey also collected current data on smoking status and breast-feeding duration. The study authors ultimately collected 204 complete surveys. The majority of respondents had never breast-fed a child, and more than 50% had never smoked.

Overall, only 19% of the mothers knew that it was considered appropriate to breast-feed while smoking. Of nonsmokers and former smokers, 89% said that women should smoke "0" cigarettes per day if they are breast-feeding, whereas 74% of current smokers replied the same. In a similar manner, at least 64% of each group responded that a woman should not breast-feed if using NRT. Nonsmokers and former smokers were also much more likely to advise that a woman should stop smoking and then breast-feed (> 70%) compared with only 33% of current smokers.
