True story, I swear. Telling inspired by the trailer for Gran Torino. That stuff really happens.
I work the graveyard shift at a convenience store/bait shop. Not exactly where I thought I’d be at 61 with two master’s degrees and 20 years negotiating $ multi-million deals with international companies but life’s what it is. The managers like to hire us “mature” people because they, too, are mature and besides, we’re real reliable compared to gen Y.

There’s one kid who got his job because his father stocks the snack shelf and does a great job for the store. He’s 18, just out of high school and absolutely worthless. Really, not my imagination. Unkempt, overweight, sits on his butt all day, crude beyond any socially acceptable measure and is even surly with the customers. Nobody likes the kid.

For some reason he singled me out to elicit outrage. He shows me the worst sort of porn stored on his cell phone and makes really over-the-top commentary whenever I’m around, usually involving sexual contact between us. Not that any one else is spared, mind you.

During the overlap between his shift and mine he was sitting on a barstool next to the cash register. Apropos of nothing he says to me, “Picture my balls in your mouth.” It took about 5 seconds to sink in. I reply, “Picture my foot in your face.”

“Naaa, can’t happen,” was the response.

I took two steps, threw a front kick that fell a foot short of his face followed by a basic punch that ended just short of his nose. Now, it wasn’t a pretty kick and my form was nothing to be proud of, what with not practicing Ti Quan Do for more than thirty years but all he could see was the sole of my cross trainer followed by my fist hovering an inch from his face.

Without saying a word I stepped backward to where I was. After that we didn’t speak and he was even subdued with the rest of the staff.

A month or so later a co-worker, a retired woman who works just to maintain social contact, asked if the stories were true, did I really threaten to kick Casey in the face. Well, yeah, I said. Lucky I didn’t actually do it ‘cause I’d go to jail and he’d go to the emergency room. Besides, it cost me.

“Cost you how? Did he file charges?”

“No, pulled a hamstring and walked with a limp for two weeks. As long as he wasn’t around anyway.”

“Well, I’m glad somebody showed him that old people can stand up for themselves. Wish you woulda’ connected. Would serve him right.”

Casey and I did speak just before he got fired for giving himself a raise out of the cash register. He asked if I really would have kicked him. All I said was that you shouldn’t mess with people you don’t know because you don’t know who they are, what they’ve done or what they’re capable of.

This is a true story, I swear. Just thought I'd share.

10. You know how every now and then you come across someone you shouldn't have messed with?
Edited on Sat Jan-17-09 05:57 PM by givemebackmycountry
That's me.

Pretty much how I live my life.

I'm open to almost everybody and everything.

But, over the course of the past eight years, I've learned that when someone decides it's a good idea to cross that line, it's not going to end well for you.

I'm not a warm and fuzzy, kum-bay-ah singing liberal.
I'm a want to pull you out of your car at a red light for your Bush/Cheney bumper sticker, and beat the shit out of you kind of liberal.

I'm not going to be shaking any Freeper hands any time soon.

11. Does your company have a sexual harassment policy?
"Picture my balls in your mouth" constitutes sexual harassment. Even though, I like what you did better, maybe you could get the budding sociopath fired.

14. good that you held back
several years ago an acquaintance 25 years my junior was in a very disrespectful mood and was insisting on getting on my last nerve.
I should give a little background info here.I'm not a tough guy and have never been one to enjoy physical violence.I'm more of a "Lets roll a doobie and work it out",type.I actually liked the kid and normally he wasn't so offensive, but one of his favorite topics of conversation was about what a badass he was which I let go in one ear and out the other. He was aware that I didn't care much for fighting and have very little experience in that arena.Well to make a long story short, this particular day was my 46th birthday and I wasn't in the mood for his bullshit.Basically I told him to fuck off and decided it best to remove myself from the situation and headed out the door.
Apparently he decided it was time to put the old man in his proper place and came out after me and threw a right cross at my face.I saw it coming just in time to bob enough to avoid serious contact and started to walk away but then I had the thought that if I let him get off with no consequence it could be a problem in the future,so I let him have one back.I didn't try to swing hard,it was just a quick jab meant to let him know I wasn't one to batter with impunity.I'm not sure how,it must have been the way my wrist flicked just before I connected but it was obvious there would be no more fisticuffs necessary and I continued on my way.The next morning his girlfriend came over and told me she had taken him to the hospital the night before because he had started to babble nonsense and was seeing things and talking to his dead father.Apparently I gave the poor kid a concussion and jarred his brain a little.I felt terrible about it.Had no idea I was capable of that.Haven't hit anyone since.

20. If you had not taught him a lesson, someone else surely would have
and it would not have ended well.

It takes a lot of patience and thought to handle the situation the way you did. I'm not sure I would been able to do that.

Casey is a better person because of what you did.

Thanks for sharing! :hi:

21. Speaking of "Gran Torino incidents", I'm now glad that I'm no longer living in my old house...

... in San Diego.

On this last New Year's eve, after I'd left this house, just a block away where my house used to be, where I used to drive by every day I left the house, an Asian man was shot and killed by others in what appears to be an Asian style gang killing.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28471079/

http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/jan/02/bn02arrest102717-mira-mesa-shooting-arrest/

In one of my last drives through that area right before the election, I felt that my move to Oregon was reinforced by seeing a whole slew of "Yes on Prop 8" signs along that same street (Dancy). A few years earlier in that neighborhood I had my old Acura stolen one night parked in front of my house.

There's a lot of breakdown of morality out there. Either deal with like you did, or move on to someplace else where people work together instead of stay at odds with each other.

23. Remember-
Old age and treachery will beat out youth and skill any day. I'm not quite old yet, I'm staring at 50 in about a year and a half, but I always look forward to being tested.

Why don't we walk down and... Well, need I say more?

24. My dad was a pro boxer who fought heavyweight champs back in the day
When he was 80, a kid slugged him on a bus when he asked the kid to move his feet so an old woman could have a seat. The kid learned the hard way that boxers don't lose their reflexes even when they are otherwise old and slow.
