Mom miffed over gay mag...
A Vancouver, Canada. mother who took her 13-year-old daughter to American Apparel expressed her outrage against the store for displaying magazines with homoerotic images.

Trina Campbell and her daughter saw Butt magazine sticking out of a backpack included on a display inside the store, according to CBC News. She pulled the magazine off the display and flipped to a two-page spread of two men having sex.

"I don't think this is something that the average person wants to see unless they're ready or going out of the way to see it," she said in the report.

When she went to complain to store managers, however, she was told that American Apparel headquarters decided to put the magazine in the display. Staff members told CBC that they sell the titles only to those with proper ID showing that they are 18 or older.

"This was right there, and whether we had to produce ID to purchase it or not, we didn't have to produce ID to look at it, and it was too easily accessed," Campbell said. (Michelle Garcia, Advocate.com)

2. I think it's more about adult material/porn in a store where teens shop
than the fact that it's gay particularly. I think her complaint is reasonable enough.

5. Teenagers shop at convenience stores and they sell adult magazines
So do book stores, and I see plenty of underage people in bookstores.

Why was the mom looking at gay porn if it offended her? It sounds like the mom and not the girl picked it up from the way the article's written.

18. Yeah, but generally they can't go in and pick it up
Plus generally one doesn't expect to find adult magazines in a clothing store. There's nothing in the article to suggest the mom objected to it being gay in particular.

21. Depends on the clothing store
It wouldn't surprise me to see them in American Apparel, actually.

And, yeah, teenagers generally can go in and pick it up, at least around here. In NJ, they aren't kept behind the counter. They're wrapped, but that never stops people from opening up the wrapper.

24. They sure don't sell porn magazines in any convenience store
I've ever been in in my state- or in the Barnes and Noble here. And Mom probably picked it up because of the title and her suspicion that it was porn.

Not sure about other states.

Convenience stores around here don't carry them at all, that I have seen.

4. The issue here should be adult content
ANY magazine (or video or whatever) depicting sexual acts shouldn't be available to kids. Doesn't matter if it's gay, straight, or Freepers with their sheep.

Now the question is whether or not this woman would have had the same objection to a comparable hetero magazine.

13. That's what it sounds like.
She had to remove it from the display, and flip through it again and again. Then she had to buy the issue and take it home as evidence.

Edited on Sun Jan-18-09 08:35 PM by TheWraith
For explicit adult material to be deliberately put in proximity to minors, particularly in a clothing store where people wouldn't be expecting it, is inappropriate. I don't support the people who try to make it impossible to sell porn, but there's a big difference between it being available and it being just lying around.

I qualify it, saying "probably" right, because we only have a snippet of the story to go on.

Here, here's their website. It's slightly less graphic than your typical porno mag, but you see more people not wearing their clothes than in them, and the photos are mostly shot to look like sketchy amateur porn or really skeezy stuff from the 70s. http://americanapparel.net/

31. Ah, yes. That's PCGM.
"Political Correctness Gone Mad".

Worse, people have forgotten about context, and here comes the usual semi-irrelevant tangent. In the 1970s, some game shows did their share of snarky remarks. But people knew the context; these days, snark is about being as cruel as possible. If "American Idol" and "The Weakest Link" are anything to go by; the difference being, 70s game shows allowed a sense of fun for all. Today's media is just about the ratings and the MCs doling out the acidic jibes certainly don't look like they're a part of the party. They're the firing squad.

Point being: it's hard not to feel offended if the context isn't appropriate.

32. Trina Campbell should pull the stick out of hers
The magazine was part of a store display, the store was selling the backpack not the magazine. Campbell had to actually make the effort of vandalizing the display to be able to see the content of the magazine so if she would have kept her hands to herself she wouldn't be wasting our time with her feigned indignation.

34. Good point - some miscreant kid might have put that magazine in there instead;
in place of one that was there originally.

I didn't read the linked article, only the OP, and it's not a proper magazine stand.

Whether or not Trina was feigning or not - I'm not a psychiatrist nor do I have the equipment to verify her emotional response of the time. Of course, if she was feigning, I have the equipment to make her happy, but as she has a kid, she's already got something similar of equal operational power at home...

Well she went out of her way to see it, what did she expect from a magazine named Butt, so I'll stick with my feigned indignation comment.

40. That isn't the point
The point is that her child could walk up to that display, pull the magazine out and start thumbing through it. It wasn't in a wrapper and quite possibly not in an area where it can be monitored to make sure children aren't looking at it. As much as I hate to say it, the mother's point is not completely out of bounds here.

41. It's exactly the point
First of all her child wasn't the one with interest in the magazine, at no point does she say her child was actually exposed to the material. Her gripe is that the material is in the general proximity of her precious spawn.

44. People are hilarious sometimes, in a pathetic sort of way
"Trina Campbell and her daughter saw Butt magazine sticking out of a backpack included on a display inside the store, according to CBC News. She pulled the magazine off the display and flipped to a two-page spread of two men having sex.

"I don't think this is something that the average person wants to see unless they're ready or going out of the way to see it," she said in the report."

===========================

She didn't really go to the trouble of pulling that magazine out of the rack....oh no....

It literally JUMPED out of the rack and landed in her hands and fell open to (how convenient) a two page spread of a couple of guys having sex....not some innocent two page ad for shampoo and cologne or something...

In fact, I'll bet that dastardly magazine stuck itself in her hands and turned all its pages one by one....verrrrry slowly...just to torture her and burn their ungodly images into her poor innocent eyeballs.

That will probably be the basis of the lawsuit I bet this idiot will bring against that store...
