To the Editor,

On the eve of his birthday, I wonder what the world would be like if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today. I thought his quotes would best point out where his efforts would be directed.

“Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal.”

Dr. King would surely protest the torture done by America in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib.

“We must rapidly begin the shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society.”

Dr. King would have been active in the discussion of the crimes committed by Wall Street financiers that have resulted in the economic crisis today.

“A right delayed is a right denied.”

Dr. King would have protested the passage of the Patriot Act, which removed several Constitutional rights after 9/11.

“One of the great liabilities of history is that all too many people fail to remain awake through great periods of social change. Every society has its protectors of status quo and its fraternities of the indifferent who are notorious for sleeping through revolutions.”

Dr. King would have vigorously protested the “family detention centers” such as the T. Don Hutto Immigration Center in Taylor, Texas.

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”

Dr. King would have been at the forefront of equal access for all Americans to medical and dental care.

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

Dr. King would have opposed the War in Iraq and campaigned for use of those dollars for programs that would have benefited all Americans and ultimately, the world.

“Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: — ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

On his 80th birthday, Dr. King would sit back, proud that an African-American is going to be sworn in as president. I hope Dr. King’s dream is finally coming true.

Beth Dawson,

Red Oak

" Thank you Ms. Dawson. As I remember the hard work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and watched in awe at his courage, and all that he did in his lifetime - I am saddened all over again that his life was taken because of all that he tried to do - for all people.

We can all learn from him, and one person at a time - we can make a difference. Just as you do, each time you use your "Freedom of Speech" to express your views.

I honor you also for taking time to write thoughtful letters, helping people to converse, and to think outside of what is presented to us on television.

Thank you. "

" You sound like one of those kooks at democraticunderground who are consisitently calling for conservatives to be rounded up and summarily executed. Dr. King would probably tell you to either change your heart to that of love or to keep your hate speech to yourself.

Not that you care for Dr. King anyway, except to use him as a political prop for your worthless ideology. "

I found particularly interesting her statement "my neighbors are not the most enlightened people."

In case there is any confusion about what passes for enlightenment at DU, check out some of the threads about Christians and law enforcement personnel. "

" Beth,

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an unbelievable man we had the honor and privilege to have had live during our lifetime. For you to use the honor and spirit of that man to defend your personal political ideology is both arrogant and ignorant.

You claim to wonder what the world would be like if he were still here. What you should have said is you fantasize of a world where if he were still alive he would have assumed all your political views.

It would be wonderful if love, joy, and peace filled the universe, but such is not the case and the sooner you realize it never will be the case the better. Unfortunately, you never will. You'll take your ill-conceived views to the grave, and spend a lifetime hating those of us that view the world through a lens of reality.

I feel no remorse for the men held at Guantanamo Bay or Abu Ghraib they chose to fight in the manner they did, and in doing so gave up the rights to be treated as prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention. We didn’t force them to launch rockets, fire weapons, or cut off American civilian heads while hiding behind women, children, hospitals, and schools.

Like I said it would be great if peace and love encompassed the world, but it will never happen. You can not find a 10 year period in the history of the planet where there was not a single conflict (war) of some kind. With that said, this country has done more to liberate people around the globe from tyranny, disease, and hunger than any nation in the history of this world.

I lost no constitutional rights with the passage of the Patriot act. I guess that's because I am a patriot. Maybe it should have been called the Non-Patriot act because that is who it seems to harm the most. Those who project impropriety and secretly work toward the destruction of this nation.

Equal access to healthcare? I want access to the healthcare illegal immigrants have at Parkland Hospital. Not only do they get FREE healthcare, they get FREE car seats, FREE diapers, FREE formula! Everyone screams for government health care but they wont see first hand the realities of such. Instead they lay back in their warm beds and take what left wing ideologist tell them to be fact as fact and act as parrots for the left.

Unfortunately, all you’ve done is what so many others have done throughout history and that is to pull tiny quotes in time from great men or even the bible to support your own positions because you’re unable to do so on your own.

Its a shame we cant just celebrate the man and not have to withstand the barrage of the misguided to have to use his memory to further their own political beliefs.

Ms. Dawson........ Want a cracker? Lay off the Kool-Aid "

JJ wrote on Jan 16, 2009 11:29 AM:

" Kudos to Elizabeth!

That which was suspected is confirmed! Ms. Dawson is drunk on left wing Kool-Aid and can't think for herself. So sad! "

JeffR wrote on Jan 17, 2009 11:05 PM:

" Nicely said, Beth.

My sympathies about having to share space on the planet with some of the troglodytes who weighed in above.

Fortunately, their hegemony is over. They're already irrelevant backwash. They're just not smart enough to realize it. "

AC wrote on Jan 17, 2009 11:50 PM:

" It is sad that on the eve of MLK day that a letter such as this could bring out so many uninformed comments attacking the writer who actually did some research on the man.
No one who knows anything about MLK would think that he would approve of the path this country has been on. WAR, torture, unconstitutional imprisonment, are all things that we can be sure that he would be against. This country was full of patriotic people who cheered his death and saw people who believed as he did as cowardly commie liberals, some things never change. "

unhappycamper wrote on Jan 18, 2009 6:04 AM:

" I find it amazing that R-wingers can attack MLK. What is it with you folks?

Here's a news flash:: the economy is in the toilet. We're spending a trillion dollars a year for the military. Wake up!!1! "

United wrote on Jan 18, 2009 6:37 PM:

" Did you ever think that what turned eyes to Dr. King was his death? The clocks would probably be reversed by years if he hadn't given his character as well as his life for the purpose he did. Upon his death, he became a national hero and people have theorized what would have happened if he hadn't died--where would be be. Probably rights would not have progressed as they have---not nearly as much as they have. "
