I know that this may be a dumb question, but wouldn't that work?

14. Maybe Not Louder, But A Different Sound Equally As Loud
Or some sort of sound that scare the geese away. It could be a high pitched sound that only the geese hear.

It just seems to me that sound is the only way to fend off the geese.

...that might help.

Of course there would be A LOT more bird poop raining down if that were the case.

It does no good to use the car horn on the geese that block the driveway where I work. They'll turn around and look at you and you just know if they had fingers they'd be flipping you off.

16. Airports already do a lot to keep birds away -- JFK uses falcons,
as well as firecracker like devices. I'm sure other airports are also using falcons, probably dogs, too.

Many airports already use loud sounds and whatnot to keep birds away.

For the most part, the roar of the airplane itself is enough.

19. Have you seen
the thing they paint on the center cone on jet engines that sorta looks like an eye?
An A/P mechanic I worked with years ago told me that it was supposed to scare birds away.Said it was supposed to look like some kind of predator that the birds steer clear of.

I have no idea if this is true but it seemed reasonable enough an explanation to me.
If its not true, anyone know why they do it?

Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 12:50 PM by Donald Ian Rankin
So the plane would hit the geese before the honk did.

For take off and landing, possibly, but I doubt a horn would be scarier than a plane.

The speed of sound at sea level is roughly 767mph.

The cruising speed of most commercial airliners tops out at something over 500mph.

My apologies; all I can say in my defence is that I'm a mathematician, not a physicist, and planes travelling at the speed of sound is something I remember coming up when studying the mathematics of waves.

FWIW, and if memory serves, the Concord and the Tupolev were the only supersonic passenger jets to see wide service. The Concord was in fact used in a lot of examples about such things.

50. Not exactly, doing that at low altitude would cause the skin to melt.
At low altitude they're significantly slower. It's only when they're higher in the atmosphere that the air is low enough in density to allow the plane to efficiently travel at higher speeds.

they don't belong together. but because nobody would want to live or work there, and the epa requires them to be somewhere- they figure it's a good way to kill two birds with one stone- and a helluva lot more with airplanes.

I mean, who needs that noise? We should be using high speed rail for regional travel...and get over ourselves when it comes traveling longer distances.

You can't power a jet with electricity from the ground at the current time, so it'd be better for the environment.

sitting on a train from ny to san diego. Trains stop, change engines etc. I tried that once up the east coast just to see, it sucked, even with a private car. It was almost as much as a first class ticket.

You have over a 250mph speed difference in the fastest train and the slowest jet.

Many airports are built in or near wetlands.

San Francisco, LA, SeaTac, Anchorage, San Diego, and probably many others are built on or near wetlands.

I worked on bird strike hazards at the Santa Barbara Airport, and it's built on a big estuary. You'd have to fill in a LOT of wetland area in order to keep most of the birds away, and then where would the birds go? All their other habitat is gone. :(

...was to remove the food source that geese favor (mostly grass). The perimeter surrounding DIA is virtually goose free and allows aircraft to climb out without encountering the large flocks of geese that migrate into Colorado.
