100% union grown in the USA!

Thanks to Charles Showalter at The Union Edge for passing along information about a union coffeemaker, USA Coffee Company. In a time when your dollars spent at Starbucks goes to pay their union buster and you don’t want to quit the need to caffeinate, you can support workers who are members of the ILWU in Kauai, Hawaii. Look for future stories about products made with value by workers who are valued by their employer. Notice the lack of a price difference? That’s right, union made products cost no more than non-union, but you can be sure that more of your dollar goes to the community through the workers' paycheck. Now that’s a change we can all believe in.

I've been ordering all my coffee beans on-line for the past 10 years or so. Most of it had been from Gevalia.com, but occasionally I'd search the web for specialty beans. I most certainly will order that Obama Java Inaugural Brew, if only for the label!

On edit: DONE! 2 pkg. of Obama Java Inaugural, and 1 of Kona (all whole bean).

7. It looks interesting, but....
I couldn't find anything on their web site regarding when they roast vs when they ship. I would guess that shipping from Hawaii to most other states is going to take at least a week, so for freshness they should be roasting and shipping the same day. If they are stocking their coffee for a week or two after roasting, this would not be good.

8. If you write customer service, let us know what you find out

We freeze our whole bean after UPS brings it. We use a competitor that is fair traded. We will be giving this USA company a try.

About Our Coffee

At 22 degrees North Latitude, Kauai has the ideal geographic location for growing coffee. Relatively cool evenings, light winds, and low cloud cover allow for the slow ripening of cherries. Kauai's soils are weathered, deep and slightly acidic-the perfect environment for coffee cultivation.

All processing by-products are reused. After filtering, factory water is applied back to the fields for irrigation. The cherry pulp mulch from pruning are returned to the fields as soil amendments, restoring nutrients and reducing weeds.

Water resources are reused. A efficient drip irrigation system applies water and fertilizers directly to the trees roots NO pesticides are used. Cultivation practices also have reduced the need for herbicides by 75%. 100% renewable energy. All power need are met by hydroelectricity.

The employees are all members of the ILWU and are among the highest paid coffee workers in the world.Employees receive a full range of benefits, including, dental, and retirement, for themselves and their families.
