LINKDepressed by financial hardships and a troubled marriage, a 42-year-old Brockton man told police that he killed his 9-year-old daughter after murdering his wife because he planned to commit suicide and did not want the third grader to be cared for by strangers, according to a State Police report.
Judge Paul Dawley ordered Mark W. Benoit held without bail today after he pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in Brockton District Court. He is accused of killing his wife, Cynthia L. Benoit, and his daughter, Sarah Ann, a student at the Arnone Elementary School.
In a five-page report filed today in court, State Police Trooper Robert F. Clements summarized the horrific events that took place Thursday inside the family’s apartment on Nilsson Street, where the Benoits moved last December after being homeless. Benoit, police said, called 911 and told officers that he had murdered his wife and daughter and was trying to kill himself.
"Something bad happened here," Benoit is quoted as telling police dispatcher Robert Celia. "My wife and daughter are dead ... I just wanna kill myself ... They're gonna throw the book at me when they get here." Police surrounded the home as Benoit spent 17 minutes talking to the 911 dispatcher. He was arrested him without incident and treated for slash wounds at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Benoit told police after his arrest that he had been depressed, had not been able to get his Prozac prescription, and was worried about not having food in the house. He told police he killed his wife while his daughter slept and then strangled the child.
"He did not want to leave his daughter alone with people because they can’t be trusted,'' Benoit told police, according to the report. "Benoit stated he was sorry but they were better off because they never had any food and that they were always hungry.''
Benoit left a four-page, handwritten note near his wife's body that explained what he had done. Details of the note were not disclosed in court papers. In another part of the apartment, Benoit left another handwritten note complaining about his marriage.
