In a nutshell, the Bush admin used TIA (Total Information Awareness, a product of DARPA) to spy on every piece of every person's communication, email, phones, etc for several years.

5. Said NSA kept taped conversations of various groups, like journalists.
They were groups that had no reason to be spied upon.
