I'd be curious as to the amount of attendees to W's inauguration compared to that of Obama's.

1. 5 including the chief justice?
My mother used to say that his wife probably did not vote for him.

3. I saw a chart somewhere stating "500,000".
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 01:02 AM by samdogmom
I'll try to find a link. ME? I think if the 500,000 figure is accurate, then 499,999 of these attendees were protesters with signs and flashy hand signals for the guy when he passed in his limo.

I think most Americans thought he did not win either election and thus were not in a celebratory mood! (This is the kindest way I can state that the guy should never have been in office in the first place!)

Here's one link I found: http://www.zimbio.com/Inauguration+Attendance+Record/articles/2/Obama+Inauguration+Expected+Break+Attendance

I will keep searching because I did see a very cool comparison chart somewhere.

4. I read "300,000 braved the cold..." in a thread recently. Pathetic.
Also heard there were still 1800 tickets available for his welcome-back party in Midland - and they were free!

5. Better question: how many were at * inauguration to support him?
I was there in 2005, as part of this protest: http://www.turnyourbackonbush.org/~turnyour/?q=photos

At yesterday's inauguration, I didn't see anyone protesting. Not a single person.

6. Thank you for making my feelings known in 2005!
I think you may be right about the protest stuff. The D.C. police have reported no incidents from yesterday! They didn't arrest anyone! WOW! All 2+ million !!!!! attendees were there because THEY LIKE BARACK OBAMA!

We have truly turned a page...there's no where to go from here except up!

7. I saw some people protesting Bush still! The "Arrest Bush" folks
were on the parade route and were nicely filmed. :)

9. I attended the protest of the first. There were more protesters than people celebrating.

The press would not talk about it, but DC was overrun with people from all across the US who showed up by car and bus (like we did) to protest the selection of W. It was cold and rainy which might have deterred some of the supporters, but I think that there was not a lot of support. There were way more people everywhere we went---restaurants, streets, hotels---who had anti-Bush signs than pro-Bush regalia.

The Supreme Court building sidewalk was packed with people who surrounded the building as we marched around it three times lead by Al Sharpton. That in itself takes a lot of people if you think of how big the building is and how wide the sidewalk is. And that was just one of the protest events.

The 2005 fall anti-war protest was bigger, but I am not sure that it was any more enthusiastic than the anti-inaugural protest in Jan. 2001.

Our bus got a lot of attention when people realized that we were a protest bus from Texas.

11. Egg throwers outnumbered shoe throwers as back then shoe throwing wasn't popular.

13. I went to the 2005.

NOTHING like Obama's, not even close. Crowd estimates for Bewsh's second coronation were around 450,000 total. For every three freepers there were 25 protesters. Listening to freepers is funny. They actually had Hanoi Jane/Hippie insults on their signs, and they also called NBC "left wing". Facts and Freeps don't go to dinner often . . .

Put it this way . . . in 2005 at 9:30 AM, after waiting in a block-long LINE (as in singular line) for security, I was in the parade route. You should have SEEN all the fruit, eggs and batteries confiscated  Once I was in, there was one guy with a Bartcop "Worst President Ever" sign. It filled up a little later, but I could move around easily. I wasn't tightly packed and most of all, I wasn't freezing my 'nads off (it was 36 and raining a little. In Cleveland, we call that "spring").

I also noticed that Obama had roughly 35 highway troopers on each side per block on the parade, pretty sparse. In 2005, Bewsh and Cheney had five LAYERS of shoulder-to-shoulder police all the way up the route on each side, along with police on horseback, sharpshooters on each roof, police in riot gear with three-foot batons and body armor, etc. It was like witnessing a third-world dictatorship vs the good vibe of the Obama parade (with the exception of the 7 3/4 hour security checkpoint).

Oh, and Bewsh & Cheney didn't get out and walk . . .
