Chinese milk scam duo face death
SOURCE: BBC

Two men have been given the death penalty for their involvement in China's contaminated milk scandal.

The former boss of the Sanlu dairy at the centre of the scandal was given life imprisonment.

They are among 21 sentences being handed down by the court in northern China, where Sanlu is based.

The scandal, in which melamine was added to raw milk to make it appear higher in protein, led to the deaths of six babies and made some 300,000 ill.

2. They take them out in a field and shoot them.
There are no appeals to drag out for decades. They harvest their organs for transplants. Pretty brutal.

4. I think I would almost rather have that...
than the life sentence they gave the woman in the case. :scared:

5. Is it true that they make the family pay for the bullet as well?
I seem to recall having read that somewhere.

7. Holy shit, I had not heard that.
Some say capitol punishment isn't a deterrent. But I assure you if I lived in China, and if I ever found myself anywhere near melamine, I would run screaming for my life in fear of being implicated in these crimes.

9. Well, that's the thing about this sort of event in China.
It's nearly impossible to get caught, but if you do get caught, then God have mercy on your soul.

15. Yes. And the frequency with which such corruption occurs in China...
is evidence that savage punishment is not a deterrent. The likelihood that you'll be caught is much more so.

10. The method is changing...
Lethal injection is becoming more common, the ultimate goal being that rather than shooting for all cases.

6. Yet the children they hurt are denied medical care and will also die soon.
Not seen on NBC or CNN, but Al Jazeera. I oppose the death penalty in all cases, but sentencing these criminals to the max is certainly just. In the US they'd get bonuses. And here, as there, their victims would be denied the medical treatment and just die in pain.

14. Good (almost next) morning, friend.
It seems so easy and obvious to some of us that helping others and alleviating suffering should be a higher priority than making money and dominating others by causing pain and suffering. True among the people, but not among those who have taken state power (Bhutan and maybe a few more may be exceptions). We (we, the people here and everywhere) have had many who tried to teach that lesson and although many were murdered, there are many still fighting the good fight.

I'm half (or maybe 10% or 90% - I don't know) believing and 100% hoping that Barak Obama will be another leader on the side of the people and the grater good.

11. Wait...What?
"I oppose the death penalty in all cases, but sentencing these criminals to the max is certainly just"

How can you consider the DP just if you oppose it in all cases?

13. "To the max" was not an endorsement of the death penalty.
Life without parole. Sorry if that was unclear.
