Poll question: Best Actor Oscar Will Go To
I haven't seen any of the movies yet, but I'm kind of rooting for Rourke and Jenkins.

7. He did some critically acclaimed work and was poised for greatness, but was kind of screwed up.
Not that long ago. You must be young.

14. He was a strong, edgy actor who got stuck in the same types of roles.
He did dark thrillers, like Angelheart, but he started trying to push the envelope and wound up doing almost softcore porn, with films like "Wild Orchids." After a while he became a stereotype, made goofy professional choices (like taking up pro-wrestling), and lost his mojo with age, so that when he tried to do the roles he was best known for--erotic and/or tough guy--he seemed like a caricature.

He was good in Sin City, though. And he's the kind of actor that people liked, and wanted to see do better than he did, so he's going to have a lot of sentiment for this nomination. All of Hollywood loves to see a once-popular actor transition to a respected older actor--it gives them hope for their own careers.

23. At one time he was "the Next Brando"
Matt Damon told a story on Actor's Studio about Rourke pulling him aside and telling him that he had it and that he let it go, Damon should not do the same thing.

Rourke was the real deal, still is really, he just got wrapped up in himself. Truly an outstanding actor.

24. Yeah, he fell apart just as people thought he would take off.
He tried too hard to play himself, and that seemed to be the role he was worst at. He had that cocky, enigmatic grin that worked brilliantly when it was in character, but he started making it his whole character, and it became a joke.

I have to admit I love seeing the attention he's getting with this role. I hope he can turn it into something this time.

6. I'm guessing Rourke, since Penn won one, and the Academy loves comeback perfomances.
I wouldn't be surprised if Penn won, I'm just guessing Rourke, based on the way he's been talked about. Penn is an actor's actor, though, and many voters wouldn't mind giving him a second Oscar. Some voters actually choose based on the performance instead of personal factors, but when there are so many strong performances, of very different types of characters, it's hard to compare the roles directly, and other factors influence the voters.

Then there's Langella, who is a well-respected actor who doesn't get into this position often, with a strong performance and a solid political message that can transcend party. He's a good dark horse candidate.

second choice would be Richard Jenkins, then Penn.

Hollywood. For Rourke the nomination will be the prize.

Hollywood loves a good comeback story (it gives them hope, should they ever slip away).

Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 09:06 PM by Shardik
His role in The Wrestler was some of the best acting I have seen in a while. He was primal and poignant.
