No one in the crowd around me cheered her when she appeared on the jumbotron.

CBS's morning news program just interviewed her, which was a real surprise.

But she's being lost to history. Here she is with Eleanor R:



But the FDR library identifies her in this picture as Mary McLeod Bethune, which is incorrect.

She's one of the real heroes of the civil rights movement folks. Take note.

She, and Justice Stevens, and the Tuskegee Airmen should have gone to the Round Bar and gotten stinkin' drunk after all this.

No one recognized her there, either.

Of course, I didn't recognize Muhammed Ali.

2. While walking down and up 18th St. I pointed out Constitution Hall...

to folks and also, across the street, the Dept. of Interior Bldg that - thanks to Sec. of the Interior Harold Ickes - had the FIRST integrated govt. cafeteria. When the new building opened, black employees used the cafeteria with whites. White employees went to Ickes - who had been head of the NAACP of Chicago - and asked him what he was going to do about black employees using the cafeteria and his response was "Not a damned thing." And that was that.

3. What year was that?

We need a thread with all sorts of recollections like this, with the year of the event, so that the younger members can appreciate what they have and how far things have come.

There is a single story brick office building downtown that has two entrances and is now used by solo practitioners. It was built by a doctor as his office and up and until the 70's, the north doorway was for the whites patients and the south doorway was for the black patients and were so marked.

People need to know these things so they can appreciate that it wasn't that long ago these things went on and it wasn't by the will of the majority that they changed in many places. The majority had to be pulled into the future and had to be told that equality meant equality for all.

4. My wife, as a kindergartner, was the first black student in a previously segregated white school

That was in 1965, on the eastern shore of Maryland, 11 years AFTER the Supreme Court decision.

7. There was de facto and de jure segregation. I can believe ...

she ran into both!

I grew up in Navy housing, so there were blacks and whites. Black kids weren't black kids, they were most likely to be Marine Corps kids!

5. Ms. Height is an amazing woman! I read her story awhile ago,

a spelling bee pushed her into history.

We share a birthday and it pleases me. She is wonderful!
