Who else got hired by the 2010 Census?

I've been laid off since October, and THAT was my second job this year - I was laid off from June to August before that. 2008 sucked!

I just got hired for a full-time job within the Census staff office itself, instead of for the outside address-checking ("enumerating") which I applied for in December. My boss said that they're frantically hiring right now, 5000 within our 5-county area - but they have to hire 5 people for every 1 that "sticks". I'm in the IT Dept., and there's also a lot of community liaison with preference for those who speak needed languages.

So... there's lots of hiring going on for the Census everywhere, in every state. Enumerating, which is most of the jobs, is only for about February to June, but it pays better than most entry-level jobs and it's FEDERAL, so relatively secure while it lasts. Go to census.gov to check it out.

But who else got hired by them lately? Just wondering how many of us it worked out for.

(I used the word "canvassing" at first instead of the correct term "enumerating" because that doesn't mean anything to most people. But there is a difference between them, so... )

2. I'm still hoping.

I live in the Atlanta area, where the U.S. Census has been giving tests for quite some time now. I want a clerk position, but they offered enumerator (door to door census taker) which I turned down, primarily due to safety concerns. They offered me $18.25 an hour. The job might have lasted until June, 2009.

After I turned down the job, I sat down and bawled my eyes out, wondering if I made the right decision. :cry: I'm currently unemployed, with no money at all coming in. The woman who offered me the position said my name would go back on the list, though. Maybe I'll luck out, but I'm not holding my breath.

Good for you, though, Waiting For Everyman. I hope the job goes well for you.

5. I worked the 1990 Census as a second job

I was teaching at the time and the extra money (which was good) came in handy. I was a census taker and got salary plus expenses. (even bonuses/incentive pay) Those were some long days though. Incredibly long.

I'll have it easier than I hoped for, inside the office. And it's close by to where I live, so I'm very thankful for that too. My boss is a nice guy, he seems like someone who will be easy to get along with. I'm soooo relieved! It's been a long search.

I'm just so surprised because I only filled out a basic application and took a test, I didn't even submit a resume, and I wasn't asked for one. That's so surreal, especially for a Federal job.
