BROCKTON -- A man accused of a horrific rape and killing spree told investigators that he was "fighting extinction" of the white race and had stockpiled 200 rounds of ammunition to "kill 'nonwhite people' such as African Americans, Hispanics and Jewish people," according to a police report filed today in court.

After forcing his way into a home and raping a 22-year-old woman, the alleged assailant, Keith Luke, shot and killed the woman's younger sister, who tried to help her. Luke, 22, then allegedly turned his fury back on the rape victim, firing his gun through a white teddy bear that she clutched in terror, police said.

Down the street, Luke allegedly opened fire and killed a homeless man who happened by pushing a shopping cart. He told police after his arrest that he had planned to go to a synagogue near his home and, "kill as many Jews as possible during bingo night," according to the report. "Luke told us that he intended to shoot himself in the head when he was through."

Rabbi Joshua Cohen of Temple Beth Emunah, a Conservative synagogue in the neighborhood where Luke lives, said a Massachusetts state trooper and Brockton police officer told him this morning that Luke evidently had planned to continue his rampage at the temple. The synagogue has a bingo night Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m.

Cohen said he has never heard of Luke and believes the man had randomly decided to target the synagogue. Investigators told Cohen that Luke was acting alone.

"Through hard work and a lot of luck, the police were able to apprehend him before he was able to inflict more damage and more death and destruction," Cohen said. "As much as we like to think we’ve moved forward in our society and culture, hate and racism still exist, and it’s really unfortunate."

I had just moved to Tulsa, where I still am, and had written a letter to the editor of the Tulsa World correcting then-Senator Don Nickle's assertion that Clinton was to blame for Ruby Ridge, which as I pointed out was impossible since it happened in 1992, and Clinton didn't become president until 1993.

For my efforts, a white supremacist group in a small town to the northeast (Catoosa) sent me a care package consisting of their quarterly newsletter (on which they had written "insults" in the margins) and had included a flier explaining that the most endangered species in the world was the white woman.

I don't remember which group it was although I had done my high school senior research project on hate groups, and I remember that they were the ones full of Bubbas who just went into the woods to shoot beer cans and dream of riding the coattails of other more active groups without actually having to put themselves in danger in any hypothetical race war.

A female friend of mine back then said that she had met a local Klan leader, and he had become fascinated with her because he felt she had a lot of good qualities to pass on for the survival of the White race and was particularly enamored of her birthing hips. Alas for him, she's not a white supremacist and doesn't want kids.

So I guess protecting the white women is a pretty big concern with the various groups out there.

On a side note, I emailed the info about my care package to a college friend who had moved to Chicago. It turned out that he also had done his senior research project on hate groups and had recently gone to a park and sat on a bench across the street from where a picnic/speech was being held by the local chapter of the same group who had sent me the newsletter/flier. Turned out Tom Metzger who is quite famous in white supremacy circles was speaking before the picnic.
