Just how blood curdling is the last line of this AP article?

Victim of Virginia Tech slaying was decapitated

By SUE LINDSEY – 4 hours ago

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech Police say a female graduate student from China who was killed on campus was decapitated with a kitchen knife.

Police on Thursday identified the victim of the Wednesday night slaying as 22-year-old Xin (zhin) Yang, who had arrived on the Blacksburg campus from Beijing on Jan. 8 to study accounting.

Police Chief Wendell Flinchum says the victim and her accused attacker, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu (hy-yuhng-joo), knew each other but no motive has been established. He is in custody.

It was the first killing on the school's campus since a gunman killed 32 people before turning the gun on himself in April 2007.

The whole story is gruesome and heartbreaking. But the final line? What was this writer thinking???

Quote: "It was the first killing on the school's campus since a gunman killed 32 people before turning the gun on himself in April 2007"

As if .... what? ...... a killing every few years on a major college campus is expected???????

How much icewater does that last line put into your bloodstream???????

5. Dude, not cool
I still have friends there and I knew some of the victims on 4-16. It's been awhile, but still not cool.

2. Shitty journalism is what I'd call it.
It should have read: "The campus was recently the scene of a killing spree in April 2007 when..."

3. Heartbreaking
I graduated from Tech in May '06. Blacksburg seemed like the safest place on Earth the whole time I was there. Whatever hour of the night or day, whether on campus or in downtown or even out at the edge on Price's Fork and Pepper's Ferry (boonies), I felt safe. Since I've left there's been Morva, Cho, and now this. It's really unbelievable and I can't really accept that it's all happened at Tech.

7. made me ill--just how clueless and insensitive is this jerk? not just that a killing is
expected, but almost as if the person were disappointed another such tragedy had not occurred in the meantime.

reading and watching the local crap in my area has been painful--it is almost as if these people haven't actually got a clue what words mean.

9. The reporter is guilty of employing lousy syntax
but I doubt her intention was to imply that killings on the VT campus are de rigeur. I expect lousy journalistic writing to become more prevalent with the passage of time.

14. I agree. I don't think it was intended to imply a damn thing .....
And that's worse. It sorta says that's just where the mind goes.

11. It just seems like a factual sentence with no positive or negative connotations to me.

It could have been written differently, and maybe better, but its OK.
