For First Time In Eight Years, President Supports Roe On Anniversary
By Eric Kleefeld - January 22, 2009, 3:47PM

Here's something we haven't seen in a while -- a White House statement praising Roe v. Wade:

Statement of President Obama on the 36th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women's health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman's right to choose.

While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.

2. Excellent!
It is wonderful to see this statement after the previous 8 years of crap that spewed out of the previous administration's press releases on this very important issue.

Thanks for posting this, it is much appreciated!'

Recommended.

6. I have lived long enough
I can die happy now.

I remember the day Roe v. Wade came down. Living in Chicago, just halfway through my first year of law school, and home that day with a rotten cold. I heard the news on the radio. I couldn't believe it.

My phone started ringing. Classmates who were reading parts of the opinion to me as they had been read to them by friends at the Supreme Court. (Ah, the days before faxes and the Internet tubes.......)

Having just helped a pal through a motel-type abortion, I was overjoyed. Stunned. Happy.

All these years later, to see this come out of the White House, well, it's like my life has come full circle. I am happy.

7. Oh Happy Day...
Man, I worked my young energetic self into the ground making my county the swing county that carried abortion rights in my home state.
That long ago, huh?

I was right. Gonna be doing a lot of this from now on...
