State Department staffers compare Rice to Wicked Witch of the West.»

Reporting on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s introductory speech at the State Department this morning, Harper’s Scott Horton notes that last week several career State Department staffers compared former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz:

I met last week with a number of career State Department employees and was surprised when one said she was looking forward to the “Glinda Party” next week. I asked her: if Hillary was Glinda, the Good Witch of the South from the Wizard of Oz, did that make Condoleezza Rice the Wicked Witch of the West?

“You’re on to it,” she said
. Another person pointed out to me that after Rice’s arrival in 2005 the tone of official State Department publications changed; they began to praise and glorify Rice. “No prior secretary,” said the twenty-year veteran, “did anything like this.”

Clinton was given what the LA Times dubbed a “celebrity welcome” this morning at the State Department.

5. Hillary has a mess to clean up too.
Eric Holder will meet the same challenges in the gutted Dept. of Justice.

6. The more I think about it the more I feel the Bush White House wanted
to win praise but did deeds in the most superficial of ways. Why be a good SS if you cannot just change the publications to say you are admired. Very scary such people with superficial goals were in power for so long.

9. One of the talking head guests today was commenting on how Hillary Clinton
Could be overshadowed by the special envoys that President Obama (I love tying that!) is appointing and that if peace is achieved in the Middle East or in Afghanistan the envoys would get the credit, not Clinton or Obama. David Schuster said he did not think the Obama administration was worried about getting recognition - the member of THIS administration just wanted to get results. :bounce:

10. I think that is the most obvious thing about Obama's appointments. He appoints
people who are not neccessarily loyal to him unlike Bush. Yup - Obama will get the job done.

7. The extraordinary response to Hillary today says it all.
The State Department is sick and tired of Condoleeza Rice and her neocon views.

May she never disgrace another elected or appointed office again.

12. Glinda was the Good Witch of the NORTH (not to open any region bashing, please) :)
But all here can agree that Condi was certainly the Wicked *itch of the West (however the good folks at the State Department choose to spell it).

13. Only in the movie :)
In the book, Glinda was the good witch of the South. I don't recall if the good witch of the North had a name.
