Picking Gillibrand is dumb for many reasons...but the biggest one is
1. You probably hand her district to a Republican....and she is likely to lose her Senate primary in 2010.

The only upside is is that it ends another Blue Dog's political career.

1. I know her. She's smart, attractive, and will win easily in 2010.

6. Please, people, READ before you speak.
DINO she is not. She's a pro-gun liberal Democrat. And her chances of losing the primary are pretty low. Everything I hear about her says she's incredibly popular, quite charismatic, and she went from winning by 6 in 2006 to winning by 38 points in 2008.

7. Her constituency just became significantly more blue
I don't think she'll be voting like a DINO too much anymore.

3. Which is why Kennedy would have been perfect.
Even if she didn't run in 2010, no one would have lost their seat, no one would need to be moved around.

And whichever Dem was to run in 2010 would easily win.

I know that #1 is not a foregone conclusion. As for losing the Senate primary, I personally doubt that. She is upstate New York... fiscal conservative and socially liberal.

5. There was a correction
Apparently, a whole bunch of people have been invited to meet with the governor.

So this woman's appointment is not, in the gloriously eternal words of Scumbag Tenet, not "a slam dunk."

You said "there's a lot of sources".

What sources are saying it's her?

I'm curious.

10. The owner/operator of the biggest NY politics site, for instance: The Albany Project.
He says he's had it both from a congressional aide and from an Albany source he trusts. Andrea Mitchell was also reporting earlier today that Gillibrand was the top candidate. And WPIX TV is reporting that Gillibrand is going to be announced tomorrow.

Except for Andrea Mitchell, that sounds pretty authoritative.

13. her GOP-gerrymandered district may be split anyway - Albany Times Union:

"One possible objection to Gillibrands selection was the potential difficulty of keeping her Congressional seat in Democratic hands if she abandoned it. But with New York likely to lose one seat following the 2010 census, its likely that Democratic control of the state Senate and Assembly would allow the party to carve up the 20th District.

Its Republican majority a product of the districts bizarre shape and narrow reach from north of Poughkeepsie to Lake Placid could be absorbed by the adjoining Congressional districts in a way that would keep incumbents safe."
