Mexico to rethink death penalty

There has been a surge in murders and kidnapping across the country
The Congress in Mexico has agreed to debate the issue of reinstating capital punishment for some crimes.

The move follows a surge in murders and kidnappings in the country, many linked to drug cartels and organised crime.

Mexico abolished capital punishment in 2005, but recent surveys suggest that 70% of Mexicans are in favour of the death penalty.

The campaign to reinstate judicial executions has, unusually, been led by Mexico's Green Party.

1. Yes, because the death penalty has worked so well in this country

The BEST thing that could happen for Mexico would be for the United States to end its stupid "war on drugs". It's our attitude that helps create this thriving black market, and helps fuel the cartels.

2. Exactly, and there have been calls from some officials

to do just that. I think Mexico will have to be the first to end it, though.

The real problem there is that the cartels have completely infiltrated the military and police, usually through family ties, so that the war between cartels is spilling over into those organizations and it's ripping that country apart.

The Mexicans are sick of it. Since the violence is moving northward, we will be, too.

We need to end the war on sin, period. Sin won. It's just too popular to declare illegal by government fiat. It's never worked in the past, is not working now, and will never work in the future. Ending it is the only way out of the madness.

its in their constitution aswell.

I support both that and the death penalty for some individuals.

4. Fair and Just

I agree with capital punishment for the harshist of crimes, however only where the judical system is as honest and fair as it can be.

In mexico? Maybe not
