On November 26, 1968 - something happened in Geneva which should give us all hope!
The United Nations decided that no statutory limitation shall apply to the following crimes, irrespective of the date of their commission:

(a) War crimes as they are defined in the Charter of the International Military Tribunal, Nurnberg, of 8 August 1945 and confirmed by resolutions 3 (1) of 13 February 1946 and 95 (I) of 11 December 1946 of the General Assembly of the United Nations, particularly the "grave breaches" enumerated in the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 for the protection of war victims;

(b) Crimes against humanity whether committed in time of war or in time of peace as they are defined in the Charter of the International Military Tribunal, Nurnberg, of 8 August 1945 and confirmed by resolutions 3 (I) of 13 February 1946 and 95 (I) of 11 December 1946 of the General Assembly of the United Nations, eviction by armed attack or occupation and inhuman acts resulting from the policy of apartheid, and the crime of genocide as defined in the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, even if such acts do not constitute a violation of the domestic law of the country in which they were committed.

I know it's easy to be cynical after all the cover up and secrecy over the past 8 years, but Barack Obama does speak truth to power. The closing of Gitmo and the new revelations of all the illegal spying that was done under the umbrella of the NSA (and the Bush administration) is just a start.

I have faith that as we peel back the layers of the onion, the evidence will be so compelling that We The People we demand that Shrub and Shooter --- who abused their power and lied their way into war will be charged, tried, and sentenced. It may take more than one Democratic Administration, but once the full truth is revealed, I believe that justice for the war crimes and criminals will be handed out.

What we know so far is just the tip of the iceberg...but finally, the truth has a chance of seeing the light of day!

1. It's hard to believe our chickenshit Congress hasn't done more.
I know, we've got a new Congress now, so I'm more optimistic.

But I really believe that if anything ever happens regarding the prosecution of Shrub and Shooter (nice, btw) it will come from the international community. No more junkets to Dubai for hookers and blow.

Good post.

2. George W Bush! You are going to The Hague!
You too, Cheney!

Just as soon as you're both investigated, charged, tried and convicted of treason and corruption in the U.S.A.

Thank you for a great post, RiverStone. You are absolutely right: There is no time or any place on the planet that will be safe for war criminals and mass murderers.

7. I hope the 'run but can't hide' theme haunts them
As more secret prisons, torture, eavesdropping, and lies to war are revealed - I'm thinking there will so much smoke coming out of their guns, there will be no legal shield these criminals can hide behind.

5. I'm curious if Bush and/or his band of thieves will be enjoying any
international travel in the next few decades. Do you think another country would actually follow through with detaining them should they end up (as criminals, per the little matter in Geneva, per your post) in any of the other countries bound by this agreement? There are quite a lot, I think, no?

There's probably some loophole that would get these evil people out of any embarrassing situation (ugh), but I for one would love the idea of knowing that any and all of these countries would arrest these nitwits on the spot should they take one step within that country's border. Something, I believe (per pundits on msnbc, anyway - I forget which one) they have every legal right to do, and possibly fewer qualms about it than America seems to have to hold these creeps accountable...

I think it might have been Turley who brought this up, but I'm not sure...

Still, I've enjoyed imagining any number of scenarios over this. It's always Bush in this daydream, not Cheney. Somehow Cheney being detained isn't as satisfying, though he may be more deliberately evil and essentially more conscienceless, but Bush was in charge (sad to say) so he is the one I enjoy imagining getting hauled off in handcuffs...

But I wouldn't complain if it happened to Cheney or any of them...

6. Nice daydreams.
Mine involves *, a four foot length of chain shared with a pig and an alley in Khandahar.

It would also be quite amusing to see *'s second in command attired in only a toga wandering in Sadr City with no cash, no id, no cell phone or plastic; all on his own.
