The Vice Principal I work with was not going to announce the inauguration
during morning announcements Tuesday. After several recent months of, at times, tense back and forth between us about the presidential campaigns I came to work Tuesday certain that he was planning to ignore the inauguration. So I went to his office shortly before the kids arrived and said, "So you are planning on mentioning the inauguration this morning, right?" "No!" he said indignantly.

I quickly convinced him that this was not right. Several teachers refused to turn on their T.V.s as the hour approached, cheating their students out of viewing history in the making.

The VP has had to agree lately that the country is in bad shape right now. He even said at the end of our discussion Tuesday that if Obama turns things around he may even have to vote for him in 2012. I asked if I could get that in writing.

2. Public school, yes. What's interesting

is that, even though this is a beet red county that went overwhelmingly McCain, the results of the student mock election were close, with McCain coming out slightly ahead. That blew me away.

3. Jesus Fucking Christ.
Since when is "announcing" or broadcasting an inauguration a rule, a mandate, or a requirement?

It's a choice.

Teacher's don't "refuse to turn on their tvs." "Refusal" indicates some sort of directive.

Were you haunting your local school 4 years ago, demanding that they show THAT inauguration, or is it only this one? Are you really demanding that public schools exhibit that kind of bias? Mandating the inauguration of a Democrat, but who cares about the Republican inaugurations?

Showing the inauguration is a fine idea, especially for those students who study U.S. government. As a current event, it's also high at the top of the list. Discussing the implications of breaking that color barrier is good. It's also up to the teacher, who has to consider the schedule and other real mandates and deadlines.

We don't announce every big current event during morning announcements, and we don't bring them all up in class, except when they are pertinent to what we are learning.

It's a choice. A choice that is up to each school and teacher involved.

I can't decide if the various complaints about what schools did or didn't do regarding the inauguration are another sign of the willingness of DU, and Democrats, to scapegoat teachers and education just like the right, or if they are just another symptom of the increasingly authoritarian worldview of Democrats and DU.

Either way, I find it repugnant.

It IS completely inappropriate for an administrator to be discussing his political viewpoint or votes with parents. Admin or teacher, it's unprofessional to exhibit personal bias on the job. As I pointed out above.
