In these times of fewer and fewer “good” jobs, frequent layoffs, and general job insecurity
for many people, I think it’s to an individual’s benefits to define him/herself NOT by the job, but by who they are.

I have a degree in a field I’m not working in. These days, I know, having a degree in a field you’re not working in is quite common. Being underemployed is quite common. Making low wages is quite common.

We are who we are, not what we do.

I’m trying to get away from thinking, “I am(whatever my job is),” and instead I’m trying to think something like, “I’m a progressive who loves reading, gardening, and nature, and I have a day job as (whatever my job is),” .”

Most of my adult life I have defined myself by my job.

Let it begin with me—and this one’s not easy. :-)

1. Very good point and well taken.
Having just been let go from a job I was in for 25 years (24.98) this is a hard one for me. But I'm working on it.

I can see that many of us are going to have to take jobs that are not necessarily first choice, or even second choice. And overcoming the habit of defining ourselves by our jobs will take some effort. I'm not running full tilt for a Big Box job yet, but I can see the day quickly coming.

Just having a job (and maybe one with benefits??!?!?!) will be a big accomplishment I think.

2. If You Define Yourself By Your Job, How the Hell do You Retire?

3. I guess you could always retire and start drinking.

:silly:

Seriously, seems like lately I've heard of several people who did that. Not by design, I assume.
