Why? Is it because Bin Laden was from Yemeni? Most likely. They were hoping somehow to get the information from a large collection of Yemeni that would permit them to capture Osama bin Laden.

A reporter on C-SPAN this morning said that most of prisoners left at the camp in Guantanamo were from Yemeni. Sometimes we need to ask "why"?

2. What was his connection to Yemeni?
Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 12:06 PM by kentuck
Was he kicked out of Saudi Arabia? We do know that his father was Yemeni but made his fortune in Saudi Arabia in the construction business. Also, his driver, held at Guantanamo, was also Yemeni. Also, I think most of the mujahadeen in Afghanistan were of Yemeni descent?

4. Wasn't it Yemen where a lot of the smuggling was going through?
Remember before the Iraqi War began, three ships were parked far out in the distance and they wouldn't land anywhere. I believe they were headed for Yemen. After weeks and weeks, they disappeared. I kept asking what happened, but no one seemed to know. I know I wasn't dreaming about it.

Anyway, at that time, they were talking about weapons being smuggled through there.

5. IIRC there was at least one Yemeni hijacker on 9/11...
hard to say why they rounded up so many Yemenis though. Will we ever know?

6. Yemen is the POOR step-cousin in Arabia- biting poverty
and a backwards and for the most part tribal society...

So, no a surprise that those of wealth (bin Laden) would exploit them for Jihad.
