Palin's $180,000 Worth Of "Donated" Clothes Stashed in Trash Bags at RNC

Palin's "Donated" Clothes Stashed in Trash Bags at RNC
Friday, January 23, 2009 5:35 AM

Despite the Republican National Committee's promise to donate Sarah Palin's $180,000 campaign wardrobe to charity, word has it the Alaska governor's clothes remain stuffed in trash bags at RNC headquarters, NewMajority has learned.

While Palin followed through on her promise to return her controversial wardrobe after the election, it seems the RNC has not followed through on its promise to give most of the clothes away.

During the 2008 campaign, GOP vice presidential candidate Palin was pummeled with accusations that she had overspent on clothes for herself, and even for her family -- down to baby Trig. Palin asserted at the time that the clothes belonged to the RNC. They were not her property and would be returned at the end of the campaign. A campaign spokeswoman backed up those claims, saying, "It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign." It was also understood that those that had not been worn would be returned to the appropriate retailer; those that had been worn would be used for some other purpose, perhaps auctioned off for charity or to retire campaign debt.

The expense was shared between the RNC and the McCain-Palin campaign through a joint account, but ultimately are the RNC's problem to deal with. The final price tag for the expensive duds from the likes of Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as a number of other retailers, totaled $180,000, according to Federal Election Commission records.

1. Saving them for their next puppet?
Not very fashionable, but considering it's the RNC, that's not terribly surprising.

2. The one thing that jumped out at me was that Sarah actually returned the clothes
Gotta give Kudos where it's deserved. At least she kept her promise.

20. Yeah, but Repigs are shameless. I expected her to keep the clothes
and come up with some lame-ass excuse ala Rove as to why.

I guess they've lowered the bar so much that when Repigs actually follow thru it's a total shock!

12. Kudos for political expediency?
She gave the stuff back because it really looked bad for her "hocky-mom" image. That's the only reason.

Also, she never "promised" to give them back, she was told to give them back and had she kept them she would have paid huge taxes on them.

And as for the rnc giving anything to charity...ROFL because we know how charitable the repubs can be.

Hiding at RNC headquarters, sniffing trash bags. There's a long line of folks waiting their turn.

10. they shouldn't give them to poor people.

21. Some Right Wing True Believer would pay handsomely for Sarah's bright red CFM pumps -- whereas how
many low-income women do you know who could wear/need a pair of shoes that silly? The clothes are worth much more in cash as collectors' trophies than as actual clothes to be worn by actual people in need of clothing.

Those spiffy little short skirts don't go with living in a cardboard box.

22. Yeah - freeper types would pay 10x what that stuff is worth for the
privilege of owning something Palin wore - especially if it hadn't been washed. I'd say this is a great idea if I actually trusted the RNC to do something socially responsible with the proceeds...

6. Perhaps they're just holding on to them until 2012?
No one will recognize them then, right? :eyes:

I think this is just typical of The Republican Party. Typical of how they waste money. So much for being fiscally conservative. You can bet most Americans would attend to $180,000 worth of unused clothing pretty quickly.

This just seems to be perfectly in character for the GOP.

23. They probably thought she would want to buy them
Or somebody would want to buy them for her, but she doesn't have the funds.

26. she could make millions ... eBay selling of her "used" underthings ...
like any other "used panties" site, she could wear them for .001th of a second ...

Don't you think there'd be hundreds of thousands of Repukes slobbering over that idea?
