28. Actually, the video could easily be a hoax.

If you watch it again, you'll notice that there are no shots verifying the hook being set, or of sharks/fish actually hitting on a swimming kitten. In the one scene where it looks like he's setting a hook, the fisherman "conveniently" angles the cat so you can't actually see it do any damage. In the following scene where the fisherman is holding up the "hooked" cat, the kittens body position suggests that a string may simply be looped around its body.

If cats are being used as bait, I fully agree that it needs to be stopped. I'm just not convinced that this isn't a hoax. PETA ran an anti-fishing campaign a while back where they simulated placing hooks through dog mouths, and ran billboards proclaiming, "If it's not OK for dogs, why is it OK for fish?" This video could be the same thing, only placing cats in the place of worms or other fish (most kite fishing is done using live fish as bait).

when I started watching the video, I got so upset I couldn't watch any more and so stopped the video and went to the website to see what action I could take to stop this atrocity.

Then I see the website consists solely of the video and a link to buy t-shirts. Absolutely no information on the group or on the issue or anything else. Who are they? What activist group provides buying t-shirts as the SOLE means of action?

And sorry to stereotype, but that guy in the video looks more like a gangster than an activist environmentalist documentary filmmaker.

and on edit: The video never shows a fish swallowing one of the kittens, nor does it show the kitten actually being 'hooked'. All we see are cold, wet kittens in the water for 5 seconds. Glad I watched the whole video. This could definitely be a hoax.

it was being done somewhere in the Pacific, IIRC. Not by Americans but by the people of some island there. Horrible beyond belief. There was some organization trying to stop it and part of that included writing to the French government. I believe the island was a French protectorate or something. Sorry, wish I could remember better but I chose to block that horror out of my mind as much as possible.
