Listening to Thom Hartmann on Nova M (internet stream) and a number of times when there should have been commercials, they played filler music.

I can't listen to an actual affiliate over the air (being deep in red state america with no liberal talk radio anywhere near me). But in the past, they had filled the commercial gaps with actual commercials.

I wondering if they (Nova M or Air America) are having trouble selling spots now (for the internet feed). I know that they don't like to drop ad rates as other sponsors get wind of the new rate and demand a rate reduction.

I know advertising in general has been suffering because of the economy, but I sure hope it doesn't affect my favorite radio programs.

We need a national progressive network such as AAR...If you have some petty disagreements is it worth condemning a whole progressive network? I love AAR - Thom Hartmann, Rachel Maddow, RFK Jr. Peter B Collins (when subbing ), Ring of Fire, Laura Flanders and many other AAR shows...And I'm a member by supporting their Podcast On Demand.

I also love the great Mike Malloy (have for the past 6 or 7 years) now at Nova M, Randi is a whiner, always has been, I've been listening to her for years, she believes only her positions are valid and screams & trashes everyone else' different points of view.

But now both Malloy & Rhodes now trash AAR...Fuck that, that's their petty problems, and they want to drag listeners into it to take sides, Are they both perfect, is it everyone else' fault they never make mistakes? They should both shut the fuck about it? I still listen to them both though for the content and to support them and their sponsors.

I have problems with Nova M, the way they treated the excellent Peter B Collins, for one...but I still support Nova M as a Founders Club Member.

The republicans certainly don't abandon their right-wing networks they may have petty disagreements with their conservative networks but they always support them for the overall message and unity of strength and that's why they are a strong force in radio & media, they stick together and don't take sides over petty bullshit about personalities.

We liberals need to support our networks too, we need to support BOTH AAR and Nova M and need to create many more networks and progressive shows!

15. I certainly can understand that! Lately I have my limitations financially as well....

So personally, I have my priorities and nothing is more important to me than to get progressive messages and issues out there for all to be aware of....so that's where I donate my bucks to, liberal media.

Remember what it was like when there was no liberal media, none, zero (except "Democracy Now" & KPFA) and that was just a few years ago - It's why progressive media is so important to me, to help get the message & truth out over the dominant well-funded right-wing republican lying corporate media machine.

So I support progress media with the funds I can allocate each month, progressive radio, "Democracy Now" and the much needed "Media Matters". (As well as supporting Olbermann, Maddow, Maher & Daily Show by watching on television).

5. It's always been that way. The filler music is for ads inserted by local affiliates.

As far as I know it's common to hear that from an Internet feed, but when you hear it on the radio, as I do sometimes from WINZ here in Miami, it's a sign that the local station didn't sell the ad spot.

6. I've been listening faithfully for years.

and except when Malloy first started up, I don't remember the internet stream from Nova M using filler.

Certainly not in the last year or so.

It indicates to me that internet stream ad slots are going unsold. And that's freakin me out a little bit.

12. Yes, I know. Hence what I said in the OP.

But I can't tell if the slots that are unfilled with ads are national spots (meaning AirAmerica is responsible for selling them, or local spots which would the be KPHX local ads).

In any event, the ad spots are unsold, and that's not good for either AirAmerica (which has had it's share of business model problems) and/or NovaM/KPHX (which had a rough start up but seems to have been solid for some time now).

7. PLEASE READ THIS - No need to freak out and here is why...

The sales teams at these networks for the most part do not many slots at all, they save the spots for the local markets to sell. I know this because I worked for IBM in my pre-9/11 days building a project for the WB.

The reason you have filler music on the tubes is because they do not know where you are, and there for an ad for KOONS FORD here in Fairfax VA means very little to you if you are in Denver. So a lot of the times there is NO national spot for thats and they play music... no matter if there is a spot in denver or no... they play music, is to let the local station know that the connection is still hot...

8. The issue is that there have ALWAYS been local spots

usually for the local Phoenix dentist or a local "two men and a truck" moving franchise (I'm in Arizona and would be considered "local" to those ads).

I'm hoping that they are still selling the local spots because that's a significant revenue stream that helps to pay for Randi and Mike.

16. What ticked me off about Randi's show today...

...(besides the thirty-minute commercial breaks full of ads for nothing but debt relief or Randi flogging cosmetics and gold, that is) was the ad for MessiahForPresident-dot-com. Hello? Tone-deaf much?

17. Thom Hartmann also has a "buy gold" ad that plays periodically...

and I swear, a few weeks ago he had a financial expert on his show who said that it was a very bad idea to buy gold in the current market, and Hartmann enthusiastically agreed without hesitation. Then they went to a break and Hartmann's "buy gold" ad was played. :blush:

18. They're Spots Are Being "Covered"...

Many radio stations are trying to sell their internet streams as a separate from their over-the-air signals and if that time isn't sold, they will cover the music or public service announcements. The Chicago Air America affiliate does it with their stream...I also hear them do it with KGO.

The economy of radio is in dire straits right now...and I wouldn't be surprised if stations are having tough sledding right now. January is never a good advertising month.
