A Personality quiz about your religious and spiritual beliefs. How do you score?
Even if YOU don't know what faith you are, Belief-O-MaticTM knows. Answer 20 questions about your concept of God, the afterlife, human nature, and more, and Belief-O-Matic™ will tell you what religion (if any) you practice...or ought to consider practicing.
How did the Belief-O-Matic do?

22. Interesting- views on theology and issues seem to vary among individuals
perhaps that's why many of us score highly as to Liberal Quakerism.

I'm guessing that there must be more "conservative" Quakers too- perhaps with respect to identification with Christianity.

Interesting. Thanks!

120. Here's a better link.
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 06:27 PM by Ms. Toad
(Although the summary is reasonably accurate).

http://www.fgcquaker.org/ao/new-quakerism Some of the "pamphlets" on the page are a quick read.

There are four groups of Quakers in the US. There isn't anything formally called "Liberal Quaker" - but they are probably referring to meetings which are members of Friends General Conference (the link above). FGC Friends usually worship in the traditional manner of Friends (unprogrammed worship, without a scheduled or paid minister, for around an hour once a week).

There are also Conservative Friends (as in conserving traditional practices, not necessarily socially conservative - although they tend to be that, as well - more Christocentric and often - but not always - share traditional Christocentric beliefs about things like abortion and marriage). (Edited to add: This is probably what they are calling Orthodox Quakers)

The other two groups are closer to mainline Protestant denominations, and both tend to have paid ministers, singing, bible reading, etc: Friends United Meeting and Evangelical Friends International. The latter tends to be more socially conservative than the former.

(Edited to add: 100% Liberal Quaker - born, raised, and still am.)

74. Tolerance and open-mindedness is probably how they "fit"
I have points in common with a lot of sects I wouldn't necessarily want to be a member of, but then as my old mother tried to teach me, at heart all the faiths practice the Golden Rule.

31. Lots of people at the UU are atheists. Some believe in Jesus. You can believe
whatever you want pretty much. We sing Hindu hymns. It is a really nice place to go to feel included, to feel humanity can be at its best, to feel connected to the greater world. I reccommend you go if you feel there is is something missing in your life. It is great.

or necessary

It clearly fulfills a need some have to get together regularly and discuss areas of common interest.

I'm not a joiner, and feel much closer to spiritual things outside of a church than in one.

But I enjoy the meals more than the services. I know a few politicos who are UU, and always enjoy our get together outside of church.

140. Google Unitarian & your city. I'm not one for philosophy so I'll copy
their principles right here so you can get a taste.

"We, the member congregations of the Canadian Unitarian Council, covenant to affirm and promote:

- the inherent worth and dignity of every person;
- justice, equity, and compassion in human relations;
- acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
- a free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
- the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
- the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
- respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."

77. Boy, the poor Jehovah's Witnesses
Are getting their asses kicked by this crowd! And I don't see the Mormons anywhere on this list.

We must share a common allergy to religions that demand we go door-to-door trying to convert the Heathen. Hell, we are the Heathen!

Or to those who start Holy Wars, though I must confess I'm a paid-up member of Unitarian Jihad: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/04/08/DDG27BCFLG1.DTL

79. My Scores
I was born and raised Roman Catholic, but disagree with my church on abortion rights, birth control, divorce, and creation/evolution, the latter of which I do not remember being taught that God put the dinosaurs and humans on Earth 10,000 years ago, or whenever, I always had fun with my Jehovahs Witness co-worker when he would give me literature on their belief, and I would read it just so I could highlight/underline the parts that he wasn't following or doing. He would then sit in the company break-room at lunchtime with a puzzled look on his face reading my highlighted parts over again...LOL!!!

88. Was very surprised that neo-pagan came out 100%
I was raised Roman Catholic, but have absolutely no hostility toward RC's because my life long experience with Catholics (my family included) are that they are loving, accepting and very liberal.

No surprise that my "match" with Liberal Quakers was 90%, they are a group that I have toyed with aligning myself with for years.

Pretty cool quiz.

89. Neopagan is my top one.
Which fits, as I consider myself a rather non-practicing Celtic Pagan , with a lot to learn. I'm an intensely spiritual person, but I'm also a skeptic (I believe Celtic gods and goddesses are symbols rather than actually existing, and am a firm believer in science). I believe whatever god, spirit, etc. that exists does not actively intervene in human affairs, but rather is contained in everything.

92. Well, this does fit pretty much where I am coming from:
General beliefs of UUs

Unitarian Universalists (UUs) believe in complete but responsible freedom of speech, thought, belief, faith, and disposition. They believe that each person is free to search for his or her own personal truth on issues, such as the existence, nature, and meaning of life, deities, creation, and afterlife. UUs can come from any heritage, have any sexual orientation or gender identity, and hold beliefs from a variety of cultures or religions.

Concepts about deity are diverse among UUs. Some believe that there is no god (atheism); others believe in many gods (polytheism). Some believe that God is a metaphor for a transcendent reality. Some believe in a female god (goddess), a passive god (Deism), a Christian god, or a god manifested in nature or the universe (pantheism), as revealed by science. Many UUs reject the idea of deities and instead speak of the "spirit of life" that binds all life on earth. Unitarian Universalists support each person's search for truth and meaning in concepts of spirituality.

109. I think UU descriptions are deceiving
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 04:41 PM by New Earth
at least when it came to the church I was going to. Yes, they 'respect' all the different religions but at least in my church, did not incorporate them in any way into the services or general functions of the church...they are overall Secular Humanist, with the exception of some of the congregations out there who are a little more heavily influenced by a specific religion (some more Christian, some more Pagan, some more Buddhist). Mine was 100% atheistic/secular humanist. Completely drove me away, not spiritually satisfying at all. I was kind of let down and felt guilty leaving the church - I felt bad leaving because the people there were great, but I need something deeper.. I found the New Thought/Religious Science church here to be the one for me. I still love what UU's do and stand for, though. They are a good group of people.

I don't see Discordianism, Church of the SubGenius, nor Pastafarianism. I knew it! This quiz is biased towards religions that make sense!

Although...

hmm...

I guess Discordian could be CONSIDERED Neo-Pagan... Hail Eris!

104. UU or Liberal Quaker for me
I am churchless right now, though I would probably be content in any of the top three choices. There are elements of Buddhism that appeal to me. Mostly believe systems that are not very structured in their ceremony, or are too heirarchical in their organization and therefore leave room for personal growth and revelation appeal to me. By the same token, this list explains why I left my last church. Even though it belongs to PCUSA, that particular congregation ranks a 21 on this list.

many people's results end up with UU as #1 when their beliefs don't fall under one particular religion for each question. Mine always does, but I was a member of UU church for 6 months and DID NOT like it. There wasn't anything I *disagreed* with, but it was very lacking in spirituality. Way too secular and atheistic (and boring) for me. I left there for a New Thought church...much closer to who Iam. I don't think this quiz is very accurate, but close. I definitely relate to my top 4, but I personally would NOT put them in that order. I guess I'm actually a combination of all 4 of them!

111. Gee, what a shock! I got Secular Humanist 100 percent.
Then Unitarian was next. But what's hilarious is that far more of you gentiles scored Higher in both Reform and Orthodox Judaism than I did! Bwaa Haa Haa! My great-grandfather was the dean of Rabbis in Baltimore till he died in 1953.

However, I take inordinate pride in the fact that my life epitomizes Bill O'Reilly's worst nightmare: I am a Secular Humanist Left-wing (ethnic) Jew from San Francisco.

If I had to be a demographic, I think I picked a good one!!:bounce:

122. This is a bit of surprise
I was raised Catholic (#21), currently go to a Methodist church (#6), and poke fun at my UU best friend (#1?!) Then again, I fit the UU's and the Baha'i's very well faith wise, but I feel more comfortable with a liberal Christian church. I guess my #2 will be a good fit, considering it is quasi-Christian.

I am happy that both Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses are so low on my list.

Hmmmm. Who knew?

I was raised United Methodist, but left during my teenage years. My mom later used to send me subscriptions to "Guideposts" and other Christian publications until I sent her a subscription to Ms. magazine. That stopped that.

131. Cool. I've wondered for a while now what I should "call myself"...
...spiritually speaking, provided it's necessary to label oneself at all, that is. And I don't think it is, but I've been curious. Here are my results, for the hell of it (no pun intended) :

1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
2. New Age (85%)
3. New Thought (85%)
4. Liberal Quakers (83%)
5. Neo-Pagan (79%)
6. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (75%)
7. Scientology (74%)
8. Secular Humanism (69%)
9. Mahayana Buddhism (64%)
10. Reform Judaism (62%)
11. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (62%)
12. Theravada Buddhism (61%)
13. Taoism (54%)
14. Orthodox Quaker (45%)
15. Nontheist (45%)
16. Sikhism (39%)
17. Hinduism (39%)
18. Jainism (37%)
19. Baha'i Faith (37%)
20. Orthodox Judaism (29%)
21. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (25%)
22. Islam (22%)
23. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (19%)
24. Jehovah's Witness (15%)
25. Seventh Day Adventist (15%)
26. Eastern Orthodox (11%)
27. Roman Catholic (11%)

However, when I read their description of Unitarian Universalism, I'm not much closer to "defining myself," because it's all a huge range of different beliefs, a fairly wide spectrum. "Some believe this, some believe that," etc. So I'm pretty much back where I started. :)

151. here's their description of Non-theist and secular humanist
The atheism one is shorter than most of the descriptions; maybe I just don't like their use of labels.

Atheists do not believe in a god or deity. Atheists' beliefs are similar to those of the Secular Humanists but do not necessarily include the emphasis on humanity's ability to improve the human condition. Views on contemporary issues vary widely.

Agnostics are inclined to question the existence of supernatural being(s) or a force, e.g., the answer to whether or not God (or Deity) exists would be: "We do not and/or cannot know."

Their definition of secular humanism:

Belief in Deity
Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.

• Incarnations
Same as above.

• Origin of Universe and Life
The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.

• After Death
An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.

• Why Evil?
No concept of “evil.” Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology.

• Salvation
No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.

• Undeserved Suffering
No spiritual reasons but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.

• Contemporary Issues
The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and nonviolence, and environmental protection.

Your Results
The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on this list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.

How did the Belief-O-Matic do? Discuss your results on our message boards.
