So I quit moveon today
That push poll of theirs was so infuriating. I refused to vote in it. And I wrote moveon asking them to take me off their membership list.

Then I was on my way home today and I heard Ed Schultz on the radio interviewing Eli Pariser from moveon. Eli was saying that 85% of moveon members had voted to support Pelosi's bill. Ed asked how many members moveon has. Eli said 3.2 million. I thought well 3.2 million minus one. I didn't vote in that poll. And I thought I remembered reading here on DU that other moveon members had not voted either. So I wondered just how many moveon members had voted.

Well when I got home I was surprised to see an email from Eli Pariser in my inbox. How nice of him to respond to me personally. Maybe I should change my mind about quitting?

Then I read Eli's email. And I was surprised to learn that 126,000 moveon members had voted in the poll. I teach Math. I happen to know for a fact there is a HUGE difference between 85% of 3.2 million and 85% of 126,000. And now I am left to wonder if Eli was being a tad bit dishonest when he talked to Ed or if perhaps he doesn't do well in Math?

95. They have become more and more obsolete.
I left MoveOn after their silence around the '04 election. To me, they have become too much like Donna Brazile and the DNC gang.

MoveOn doesn't hear their base supporters anymore. They don't tap into the growing tidal wave of outrage. They play it safe now. It's a shame. I don't know what happened. MoveOn could've really made a difference. But now? They're bogus.

96. moveon's agenda was painfully obvious
when I listened to Ed Schultz and Eli. They wanted to support Pelosi. Funny, I would think a grassroots org would focus more on representing its members than supporting politicians.

9. They also messed up the notifications for our Iraq anniversary rally
I was the local organizer who contacted them. I posted on their website and on UFPJ and here and on local blogs and to my email groups. It was Sunday, March 18. moveon sent out emails to who knows how many thousand members in this area telling them our rally was on Monday, March 19. As soon as I saw that mistake, I tried to contact moveon to ask them to correct it. My password didn't work when I tried to log in as an organizer. So I emailed moveon asking them to correct it. They didn't. The day after the rally, I responded to their 'how did your rally go' email and told them about the mistake. They claimed it was my error. But everywhere else I posted, the date was correct.
:wtf:

I know, I need a :tinfoilhat:

But between that damn poll, Eli on the radio today and this email screw up, I think I made the right decision.

And girl, you should have heard Ed Schultz. He was literally gloating about Democratic unity and how moveon members were with the Democrats! I tell you I wanted to :puke:

32. Listen to this story. I loved working with MoveOn because
Edited on Fri Mar-23-07 10:57 PM by sfexpat2000
they made activism accessible to me on my desktop. I put in to help out with their book and we were given the task of its West Coast debut.

So, I went to work. I booked headlining comedians, cajoled a couple of our progressive supervisors to speak and got a poli sci prof from Cal -- who was an excellent speaker -- to come out. I had the thing FILMED and put up on our local public access tv. The publisher was so happy, they sent me FLOWERS from HAWAII.

It went GREAT. And then, I booked another similar event in a different part of town, in another market. I had different political comedians, local DJs, a different city official, a couple of the contributors in a cool venue.

MoveOn couldn't get it together to send out the email but THEY CLAIMED THEY DID. It was just creepy. It's like they have some self destructive thing going. The opening here could have gone huge but, they couldn't send AN EMAIL.

It just blew me away. :wow:

/oops

113. here's some of the "more" that the bill contained
"The $124 billion emergency war bill the committee approved on Friday contains a wide range of funding for health care programs in the Defense Department and Veterans Affairs departments. Funding for DOD health care programs covered by the bill includes:"

$450 million for post-traumatic stress disorder/counseling.
$450 million for traumatic brain injury care and research.
$730 million to prevent health care fee increases for U.S. troops.
$20 million to address the problems at Walter Reed.
$14.8 million for burn care.
The bill increased funding for the VA's health care programs by $1.7 billion, including:

$550 million to address the maintenance backlog at VA health care facilities to prevent situations similar to those at Walter Reed.
$250 million for medical administration.
$229 million for treatment of a increased pool of veterans.
$100 million to allow the VA to contract with private mental health care providers.
$62 million to speed claims processing for returning veterans.

This is the extra money that the Dems "slipped into this bill for their pet spending projects", according to President Bush. If he vetoes this bill, this should be hung around his neck for the rest of his life.

But we're not "supporting the troops".

fraud. Their silence was deafening. In '04 I raised a lot of $ in fundraisers and recruited many volunteers for them. I was deeply disappointed-they wouldn't even consider our evidence.

I still go to their candle vigils, as I have friends involved, but not a cent, nor do I receive their emails first hand.

on edit I want to qualify we were NOT asking for financial assistance but since we worked at helping to build their volunteer lists we wanted info sent out to the lists-nada.

29. '04 was a big learning experience for me. After owning my own business for
17 years, I learned (again) that there were folks out for their own self interest and others for the cause. Just as with the Kerry Campaign (remember I'm from Columbus OH, so we saw a lot of attention) there were cut throat volunteers who thought they were going to get a ticket with the win, while others who just wanted to rid the world of a tyrant. I moved up the ranks because I was not a threat to anyone who was looking for a career move-just wanted my frickin life back w/o bu$h. I felt used by moveon for their own power struggle. No thanks not interested in cut throat politics-that's why I had my own business. No need for assholes only wanted to work on the cause. My lesson learned-too much politics in politics.

I understand your math, but it's only the start of what I'm concerned about re: this poll. You call it a push poll. Why?

I haven't been a MoveOn member, just a concerned opponent of the Iraq war. But I feel this matters, since the MoveOn poll was used as a street sign to beat liberals into submission, and MoveOn support for an issue has now become a benchmark of support by the base.

crap. Ask the Pentagon to use their "magic" wand to restore the lost and stolen funds the See No Evil Congress gave them. Don't even start on people who very reasonably want this slaughter and destruction to end.

Today, the Democrats had a political victory. That's a good thing. It had nada to do with ending the occupation. And everything to do with giving the cronies one more year to line their pockets while people die.

And see, I don't even need to be a blood relation to think for myself!

but I resent their "either or" polls. I sent them an email once and told them if they really wanted our opinion they would have a place to put a comment in their polls.

I wonder if they would have the courage to do a poll and ask who wants to cut the funding for the war? No, probably not.

54. Beware of Puritanism and sectarianism -
No organization is going to be "perfect" on all issues from anyone's point of view. We are many and diverse, so the institutions we have created are many and diverse. Believing that moveon is weak on imperialism is a reason to put one's time and energy into other efforts is quite sensible. They are one part of the whole progressive movement, and an important and helpful part.

I believe Moveon when the organization says that 85% of the respondents voted for the bill. The activists that I know supported the bill. So, I am not surprised at that figure. I don't know if you read kos or not, but he endorsed the bill after explaining the pros and the cons (and there are cons).

86. No. I've already said I cut MoveOn off two years ago.
But, when my family went to the march in DC in January for example, our internet access was pretty limited. And it's not only the time you are out marching. It's also the time you are preparing and the time you spend scrambling to get everything else done so you can go. And also, travel time.

MoveOn couldn't have been unaware of this process.

74. They went with the vote, and they framed the vote in a way that relected their
(the leaders' and their membership's) views of the world. Nothing unusual about that. I have never encountered any "grassroots" organization, even the best of them, that didn't work the same way. Same for orgs that get formed around some core group, with a leadership that goals and tactics. Still, they are allies in the common cause because they fight for the same things and against a common enemy. Not the vanguard elite, but a part of the whole.

I agree with all of it, but we need/are imperfect allies in a common struggle. No perfect ones are available, since no part can be as effective as the whole.

And wikipedia says:

David Swanson is the Washington Director of Democrats.com and of ImpeachPAC.org. He is co-founder of the AfterDowningStreet.org / CensureBush.org coalition, creator of MeetWithCindy.org and KatrinaMarch.org, and a board member of Progressive Democrats of America.

He has worked as a newspaper reporter and as a communications director, with jobs including press secretary for Dennis Kucinich's 2004 presidential campaign, media coordinator for the International Labor Communications Association, and three years as communications coordinator for ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now). Do MoveOn Members Really Support the Iraq Supplemental?
http://pol.moveon.org/iraq/supplemental.html

By Eli Pariser, Executive Director, MoveOn.org Political Action

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

MoveOn.org Political Action supports the passage of the Iraq Accountability Act. Because there are dedicated antiwar activists who oppose this bill, it’s worth explaining how we arrived at this position.

In order to strengthen the hand of progressives who were pushing for a better bill, MoveOn refrained from taking a public or private position until late last week. Then, when the final bill was negotiated, we put the question to our membership: should we support it? 126, 000 MoveOn members participated in the vote. 84.6% supported the bill. 9.2% said they weren't sure and 6.2% opposed it.

Why? The Iraq Accountability Act will, for the first time, set a deadline in law for the withdrawal of American troops. If it passes, it will force President Bush to agree to an end date for the war or to stand in front of the American people—who want a timeline—and declare his support for war without end by vetoing it . It’s a first step to ending the war. That’s why MoveOn members told us they support the bill.

Some folks passionately disagree with this position. And perhaps because it’s hard for them to believe that so many progressives would support a bill that provides continued funding for the war, a number have questioned the validity of our member poll on the bill. Here are some concerns we’ve heard, and the reality in each case:

I din't vote in the poll because I din't like any of the choices. To be fair, I quit donating to them during the 2004 primaries. They had begun acting a little too DLCish for my stances.

This poll became the last straw for my relationship w/them. It seems to me, that the DLCers and the Blue Dogs got what they wanted from moveon.

The Email from Eli is sitting in my inbox. He knows he fucked up and is in a panic. The story was all of the blogs yesterday. He must have receieved a great number of angry emails and please unsubcribes.
