"OOPS I ACCIDENTALLY PULLED OUT YOUR IUD" -- the danger of the "provider conscience" rule
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 10:38 PM by BlancheSplanchnik
TRUE STORY from Salon http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/feature/2009/01/22/iud_abortion/index.html

And please note, as the last paragraph of the article says, "the "provider conscience" rule went into effect on Tuesday and isn't affected by Obama's immediate order to halt Bush's pending federal regulations."

Let me tell you a true story: A woman in Albuquerque, N.M., went to a local health clinic to have the long string of her IUD shortened. No big deal -- all it takes is a simple snip. The nurse prodded her with a speculum and then, inexplicably, began pulling on the IUD, causing her sudden, intense pain.

<snip>

the nurse offered an explanation: "I accidentally pulled out your IUD. I gently tugged and out it came ...

<snip>

...the nurse continued to explain that "having the IUD come out was a good thing" and then offered, "I personally do not like IUDs. I feel they are a type of abortion. I don't know how you feel about abortion, but I am against them."

...The nurse continued: "Everyone in the office always laughs and tells me I pull these out on purpose because I am against them, but it's not true, they accidentally come out when I tug."

Please do what you can to support -- the Picower Foundation, which was shuttered due to the Madoff rip-off, supported these women's advocates: Center for Reproductive Rights needs to make up a $600,000 shortage in 2009; Planned Parenthood is out $484,000; the ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Project is off $200,000. see How the Madoff mess hits women http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/feature/2009/01/07/madoff_health/index.html

3. OMG! Revoke that woman's license NOW.
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 10:09 PM by sparosnare
Not only and I shocked she yanked the IUD out without her patient's permission, I am shocked she so candidly explained why she did it. This has nothing to do with provider conscience - she could have caused her patient physical harm and certainly has caused her mental distress.

23. surprised she explained why she did it...
Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 10:24 AM by BlancheSplanchnik
Actually, I'm not at all---

I can absolutely hear the woman's voice in my mind saying this...

The reason? My mother.

My mother was very severely mentally ill, and one of her "modes" was to cause harm and then pretend it was accidental. She would shift almost instantly from acting out and hurting me, into a weird dazed infantile state. She would "explain" herself, but in a bizarre child's tone of voice.

I came to realize she was asking for my approval when she went into this mode, and I realize it had to do with sensing guilt in some primitive way over her actions, and feeling self loathing, but being unable to admit to any kind of wrongdoing, ever. That would mean getting too close to her thoughts of how "Bad" ,and "Evil" she was.

so, "admitting" in this way is a manipulation; by regressing into a childlike state, getting people to go along with her story, ("it was an accident"), she is off the hook, and can then "tell what she was really doing".

Continuing to talk about what other people say she's doing, then denying, then admitting, is a convoluted way of confessing and seeking validation and favor. It makes the "bad thing I know I did but can't face up to" go away.

And of course, frees her up to act it all out, all over again. And Again. And Again.

28. I am sorry you had to go through that with your mother -
it must have been very difficult to deal with; knowing nothing you could do or say would 'get through' to her.

If this nurse is purposefully yanking IUDs out of unsuspecting patients thinking she is doing God's work; then she is unable to realize she's doing anything wrong. In fact, she is driven to do it; she is on a mission. She is dangerous and should be stopped.

Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 08:21 PM by BlancheSplanchnik
I'm mostly ok now :) :P

The whole experience and the recovery work I've done does give me a certain kind of insight into some personality disorders, at least. And a real love of logic and integrity! And security blankies. :D

Oh I just thought to add... I've had a few entanglements with people with personality disorders...Borderline, Narcissistic and Sociopathic...they all exhibited the same characteristic of subtly admitting what they do, then twisting it and making it sound acceptable. (I would just run into them--it's not as if I worked in an institution or anything!!.....but because I didn't have well developed instincts for self-protection yet, I didn't see what was wrong, so I got involved with them)

I don't think having an emotional deficit like that qualifies the person to be excused from consequences, however. The interesting thing about personality disorder is that in general, people who have one (and there are different types) are well aware of reality, and they are mostly aware they are doing something that if they get caught, they'll get in trouble. (At first I was gonna say, they're mostly aware they're doing wrong, but that kind of implies remorse, which isn't always present). Anyway, knowing they don't want their lies to be found out is why they have developed so many deceits, and a mask of normality to cover their asses. This woman deserves every bit of punishment the court gives her--and I hope it's STIFF!

you know, they say mental health or disease is a spectrum, and we all fall somewhere. Obviously, that woman is extreme, but the sickness of the bush regime, and of fundamentalist, politically active religion ENABLES the twisted characters.

Haa, here's a more honest name for pRick WARrens book: The Hate Driven Life!! *snort*!

5. Anybody who believes this sanctimonious sack o crap
is seriously insane. IUDs are NOT easy to pull out. Quite a it of pressure has to be exerted to get them through the cervical os, which is tiny. In addition, if your patient feels pain, YOU STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

This woman should be charged with assault because that's exactly what she's been doing to other women. She also needs to be sued into a cardboard box and her license revoked.

I wouldn't want a bag of french fries from this fetusfascist

snipped from Courthouse News Service:

This is all according to court documents filed by the patient in a suit against nurse practitioner Sylvia Olona and Presbyterian Medical Services. ...

The plaintiff demands damages for battery, constitutional violations and negligence. She is represented by Ryan Villa with the Law Office of Robert Cooper.

16. I am glad the bitch is being sued, along with her employers. She pressured the patient into...
... having a depo-provera shot, which is NOT for everyone. (Hormones make my daughter sick --when she was younger she tried both depo and the Pill, and for whatever reason they provoked ovarian cysts, ultimately causing her to have exploratory surgery at the age of 19. I never had a problem taking the Pill, but my daughter sure as hell did.)

I hope George W. Bush rots in Hell -- or better yet, prison in this lifetime. This is his doing.

I personally do not like assholes being allowed to breath. I feel they are a type of justifiable late-late-late term abortion. I don't know how you feel about assholes, but I am against them. Everyone in the office always laughs and tells me I pull these out on purpose because I am against them, but it's not true, they accidentally come out when I tug and tug and tug with all my might.

18. This makes me so sick to my stomach.
I use an IUD because I have diabetes and do not want to ever get pregnant again. I developed gestational diabetes with my second daughter and it never went away. If I got pregnant again, it would be really hard on my body. I won't use birth control pills as I take so many other medications with the diabetes it makes too nauseous. I can't believe the gall of this woman. I would sue her so fast she would not know what hit her. Some IUD's are supposed to stay in for 10 years. Pulling it out would be very painful for no reason. Its not a simple tug. What a loser.

Let me see if I understand. She doesn't believe anyone should have IUDs, but works in a job adjusting IUDs. She doesn't believe anyone should have IUDs, but it's only an accident that she keeps pulling them out and refusing to put them back in or geting someone else to do it. Riiiight.

This woman should be fired for repeated incompetence, proselytizing, and chronic Palinitis. It isn't cute or fun to fail. I feel so sorry for the patient. I can only imagine how hard it must have been.

26. I believe a case could be made for criminal conduct.
Gross negligence substitutes for actual intent in crimes that do not require specific intent. A battery would fall under this. I don't know what the DA in the area is like, but what this "nurse" is doing is grossly negligent in my opinion and not only should the victim look for civil damages, but if I were representing her, I would be on the phone to the DA pushing for criminal charges as well.

When you get the strings shortened on IUDs, is it common to tug on the strings? Especially hard enough to get one to come out?

30. they would normally be pulled through a straw like tube so as to not cause pain
they are shaped like T's and should be flattened straight before removing to avoid discomfort. That nurse probably did not have the authority to remove it, and her manner of doing so is nojn-standard procedure. She should be fired.

40. The arms of the T are on flexible springy things that collapses against the body
of the T, so it's like a tube, not an actual T. It's not a lot of fun if you're already in pain (I had one removed because of unremitting discomfort; my bad luck, I have fibroids), but it's not the torture you're imagining.

32. That's not QUITE what I was asking...
What I wanted to know was this: the nurse practitioner who rips out women's IUDs claims they just fall out when she "tugs" on the strings. When someone shortens the strings on an IUD, are you supposed to tug on the strings in the first place? It doesn't seem like you'd need to.

39. You shouldn't need to tug.
To shorten the "string" (which is really a plastic filament akin to fishing line), all they should have to do is gently straighten the strings, then clip the ends with special scissors.

He removed it but refused to replace it afterwards. I felt coerced into agreeing to have it removed as it had been in place awhile, thus my concern about it in the first place. I think this happens a lot more often than we realize.

gynecologist who, when I wanted to have a serious discussion with her regarding breast cancer (I was about to turn forty and two members of my high school class were already fighting breast cancer), flat out told me, in response to my concern over the causes of increasing breast cancer rates in general and in younger women in particular, that "we're being punished for abortion" and "we're paying for abortion" and that that was the "cause" of said increase. Bleh.
