My first wife and I would quit our jobs every summer and backpack through Yosemite to the point where we took two months to get used to using hot water again. I don't think anything beats Yosemite. Neither did Ansel Adams or John Muir. Pretty good Company, I expect.

and then up on the Mesa, I think it was Birch Road or something? (It's been a long time ago, but that's where my oldest daughter was born.) And then I lived in Bill and Debbie Beckman's little guest house. They had a plain white geodesic dome...I don't remember the address. I lived in a little house across from the Water District - I think that's what it was; some "town" building anyway -- and another big odd-looking place out in a meadow. Oh, I lived out on the cliff for a little while, too. It was kind of a peripatetic lifestyle I was living in those days. :hippie:

Had the chance to drive the PCH from San Fransisco to LA (well, almost to LA) last year. It was really a great experience. Trying to go back this spring and drive from San Fran to Portland, OR.

I loved Carmel when I lived in California as a kid. Then I came to the Oregon Coast. Spectacular! So I finally moved here and I love it! I even lived in Montana, which is also beautiful, but nothing beats the ocean.

30. My favorite part are all the little secluded beaches and places to stop

I could probably spend a month driving from LA to Portland and still not get to stop and do everything I want to do.

That drive is no joke though. I don't know, but I bet that road has claimed it share of lives. A lot of times, there's nothing between you and a 300 foot plummet into the Pacific ocean except a foot or two of dirt with no guard rail. I don't think I'd try to drive on it at night.

... having grown up in East Tennessee, I'm used to very windy roads with hardly a shoulder between you and a fatal drop. I had a great time driving it, too, but upon retrospect think it may be the single stupidest act of my lifetime.

141. I did that and the other you mention.

We drove from Stewart's Point north of Jenner to Santa Monica down the coast highway. Long before that I was in the air force and drove from Seattle to an area close to Sacramento before going over there. There's only a small section of the PCH I haven't covered, but Oregon was beautiful although that road with the sheer drop to the cliffs was pretty narly. Tillamook was very fine. So is their cheese!

I think, actually, it might be Bryce Canyon that might win for me. I felt like I was in church the whole time, and as a PK who gave up church decades ago that's saying a lot.

82. Hubby landed his job in august

He has been in Lake Oswego since September. We fell in love with Oregon back in 2002 when he did some contract work.
Well, after six years we finally got the opportunity we were looking for this past summer and ended up putting our house on the market in September the day of the biggest one day drop in the stock market in history! I cried all that week. Scared to death the kids and I wouldn't see hubby again!
We don't want to leave the house empty as it is our best investment but man, thanks to these greedy bastards our equity is shrinking. We had three showings this weekend so I have my fingers and toes crossed.

So far we've been up the coast then we drove the Columbia highway though the Hood valley, out to Smith Rock, John Day fossel bed, Sisters, Bend, Rogue River Valley, Crater Lake, then dipped into Calli to see some Redwoods than back up the coast again.
I can't wait to move and explore all the rest of Oregon and then start over and do it again!

I have lots of close contenders. Love the Pacific Coast Highway, parts of the southwest, including the Jemez Mountains of NM, Chaco Canyon is magical. Nantucket, the Vinyard, parts of Cape Cod and Block Island. The Upper Peninsula in MI. I could go on and on.

But the NEK (my home) and Hana, a place I've spent a lot of time in, strike a chord in me. And oddly, it's much the same chord. They both remind me of each other, and they couldn't be more different, geographically, flora and fauna wise, or climate wise.

I lived in St. Louis, Missouri for 8 years and thought the state was beautiful. Did you ever drive over to Alton, IL for antiquing and then drive up the great river road along the limetone bluffs, see the Piasa Bird, have lunch in Elsah Landing, visit Pere Marquette State Park? Then you can take two ferries from that point one over the Missouri River and one over the Missippi back to St. Charles, MO. That was a day trip that I took many out-of-town guests on. There is also a beautiful red-covered bridge about an hour south of St. Louis, I think only one of four left in the state. It must be made from black walnut because when you walk through it, that is what you smell.

I feel so peaceful when I visit the Vineyard. Edgartown over the 4th of July looks like an early 19th century New England small village, with bunting on every building, looking like it did in the days of the early American Republic.

A fun and beautiful place to visit. I take a catamaran out of Quonset, RI, which can be a rough ride when a storm kicks up in the Atlantic...all part of the "charm"!
