Innocent Gitmo grads find "home" in Albania - report from DW-TV
Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 02:39 PM by Cell Whitman
I don't think Albania has always been thought of as a big human rights nation but it has either found its soul or it simply couldn't stoop to the level of the USA which destroyed the lives of 20 innocent Uighurs, Chinese Muslim separatists. The Uighurs had escaped China to Pakistan and were turned in by the criminals in Pakistan who the USA paid our tax dollars as ransom for turning in the innocent Uighurs - who were then sent to our concentration camp, Gitmo. 5 of the 20 were released in 2006.

They had no place to go but thankfully Albania became the ONLY country that would take them in. Even after all this one still says he would like to move to the USA. A wingnut would say "See how wonderful we are, they all want to be here" - of course they don't want to come here to be like the wingnut cult - for some reason wingnuts think they are America, as you know.

Report updating their lives since being released in 2006 with interviews is on DW you can find here:

http://www.dw-world.de/ and go to the English service (link on right side) then go to video on demand.

Or go to DW-TV Video on Demand on left side of page here: http://www.dw-world.de/english/insight

See: European Journal for Jan 21 - this show will scroll off each week, so get it while you can. The segment is at the beginning of the program. The regular shows open in a pop up with video player options.

NOTE: for you folks without TV, DW's on demand page remains an outstanding site for a variety of programs with high quality video. Warning: can't help feeling like you are missing the real world when you watch some of the programming.

More from BBC when a few of the Uighurs were released in 2006:

1. China was Albania's only political ally for a long time
During Enver Hoxha's reign of terror, Albania withdrew from the Warsaw Pact because they felt Moscow just wasn't Stalinist enough. Hoxha isolated Albania from practically every Communist nation except for China, which continued to maintain Albania as an ally. Aside from China, Albania's only other friend that I know of was the Marxist-Leninist Party of the USA.

So, from a historical standpoint, it makes sense that the Uighurs wound up in Albania, even though Hoxha and his regime have been gone for some 17 years now.

2. Except that China was more than willing to take the Uighurs.
So the OP is wrong in that regard--Albania wasn't the only country willing to take them.

Albania was the only country willing to take them that the Uighurs were willing to go to and that the US government didn't have qualms over sending them to.

Albania was the only country that take them that wouldn't likely kill them.
