Are there groups that protect gun rights other than the NRA?
Say ones that are a little more levelheaded about it?

1. Well...
I don't know if there's anyone on the national level who could be called a progressive version of the NRA. Amendment II Democrats remains pretty informal and grassroots.

You might want to check out the American Hunters and Shooters Association:

http://www.huntersandshooters.org

They're probably halfway between the NRA and the Brady Campaign in terms of gun legislation - their main focus is, as their name implies, on the concerns of hunters and competitive shooters. Their position on gun issues is still evolving, but they sided with the NRA on the Heller case.

2. There are several, but I doubt you will find many who are
"levelheaded" - Gun Owners of America is one, Jews For the Preservation of Firearms Ownership is another. They are online, of course.

You might want to try other sites, check Gun Toting Liberal and several others that link to it.

Beware, however - several anti gunners will shortly descend here to tell you that these sites will expose you to terrible thoughts and not to even visit them.

There are a lot more similar links to liberal pro gun sites I had previously posted in the "Guns" section, if you are interested.

9. Second Ammendment Foundation is another
http://www.saf.org/

http://gunowners.org/
GAO is another however the Gun Owners of America are far more radical than the NRA. Often they bash the NRA for being sellouts by accepting compromise. In one example the NRA pushed for the NICS system because it made instant background checks possible. The gain for gun owners is it made the Brady 5 day waiting period unecessary because a check could be completed instantly. GAO threw big fit because the NRA was caving into pressure for background checks.

The idea that NRA support Republicans only is not true.
For Presidential candidates they are but we have never had a pro-gun Democratic candidate since Carter.

There are many Democratic senators and congressmen as well as local legislatures that receive an A from the NRA.

There are Republicans that receive an F or F-.

There are more Republicans supported by the NRA but there are more Republicans who support the 2nd amendment.

The NRA is a single issue group. They don't grade candidates based on other values JUST on 2nd amendment support.

New Senator from NY for example has an C rating from the NRA (which is pretty damn good since virtually everyone else from NY is an F).

3. You don't 'need' a group to protect gun rights. When gun rights
are threatened, the People can organize to fight for the Constitutional right to bear arms.
That's how Obama got elected. The People organized. The NRA is a fascist organization of which I was a member when their
main goal was to teach gun safety. It has taken over by thugs and narcissistic propagandists.
Any organization that promotes gun safety and logical common sense use of weapons should be promoted.

4. I don't worry about Obama - I worry about Republicans
Funny thing, gun rights were more restricted under Bush than Clinton

6. True. Considering there was a Republican majority for 6 years
under the Bush criminals. Citizens with guns can also protect themselves from government tyranny. That is why the Right to Bear Arms exists.

7. What major gun control measure was enacted under Bush?
I mean Bush is an ahole in a lot of ways but he stayed away from gun control.

Personally he wanted to extended or re-enact the Clinton 1994 AWB but it didn't have the political support to do so.

So while he "could" have been worse than Clinton (on gun control) he wasn't.

11. The PATRIOT act
and this is one reason why I hate the NRA. Major gun legislation is in that bill. But what did the NRA do? NOTHING!

12. What major gun control measure is in the Patriot Act?
I am serious I wasn't aware there was any.

BTW: The NRA does oppose a bill being put forward that would prohibit "terrorist" from buying a firearm. The problem is that they intend to use the Terror Watch list which has about 2 million incorrect entries and it is essentially impossible to get removed from.

13. PATRIOT act has a provision about the CIA being able to pull up a gun ownership list
Whenever they want.

There is also that bit about gun shops surrendering records to the government on demand
