Sac PD: More Bad Guys Using Fake Guns

SACRAMENTO, CA - It's been a law enforcement problem for some time, but now, an even more alarming number of criminals have resorted to using replica toy guns to commit real crimes.

The replica "fake" guns look alarmingly similar to their real counterparts. In most cases, an orange tip on the gun's barrel is a fake weapon's only distinguishing characteristic from the real thing. Federal law requires all replica guns include a neon-orange tip.

Sacramento Police Officer Konrad Von Schoech said replica guns are easy to buy -- and just as easy to alter.

"It's very easy to walk into a sporting goods store and buy one of these, then later take it home and color the orange tip and use it in a crime," Von Schoech said.

Von Schoech admitted law enforcement doesn't have answers to the fake gun problem or how to stop the altering of replica guns for criminal use.

Either by a cop or by an angry store owner.

So I don't get how this helps a criminal besides the fact that a fake gun is a lot easier to get than a real gun.
