I have my 3rd interview for the same IT job on Wednesday - Advice?

It looks like they are just making sure I am a good fit (can work my butt off and exceed expectations). If this works out (I hope so I need the money!) it will be 30% less than I was making in 2001, my 3rd job and 3rd consecutive pay cut.

Anyone got interview advice this should hopefully be the 3rd and final interview. whats with the number 3...

Oh, and try to show a sense of humor-- they'd rather hire someone who has a sense of humor that someone who sits there like a bump on a log. jmo

5. If they're interviewing you for a third time, chances are they want to hire you.

If they didn't want to hire you, you would have been rejected already.

I'm betting you're going to get an offer.

Once you start talking money, see if you can talk them up by a few thousand.

6. Try to adopt a mindset of genuinely LIKING the interviewer.

To the degree you can consciously LIKE the person, your body language, facial expressions, voice, and all kinds of subliminal indicators will make a 'good impression.' It's better to adopt the mindset and allow other behaviors follow naturally than to attempt to FAKE the symptoms of liking someone. Beyond that, gently (without exaggeration) 'mirroring' the body language of the interviewer tends to convey a cooperative mien ... it has the effect of being supportive and cooperative.

10. Usually the 3rd is mostly a meet-and-greet, make sure you're not an asshole...

... and can get along with the rest of the team. As far as that goes, try to dress like you see others in the office dressed, and don't pick your nose, basically.

It could also be that they're deciding between you and another close candidate. If it were me, I'd just flat-out ask if something along those lines is the case, and then try to position myself well if so. I've done that once or twice, and no problems resulted. I suppose some might think that's too in-your-face or something.

At the very least, I'd ask them if there were any significant gaps in my background or anything that they had concerns with, and attempt to address them head-on.

15. I think you're right -- it's either very close, or they're checking for a good fit. I second

the suggestion about asking if there's another candidate and if so, what it would take to be the hire. It's hard and a little scary if you're not used to it, but it's a good thing to do.

yourself in the eye on the way down so you'll tear up and then look up at personell manager as pathetically as possible and plead for the job.

14. In IT? Run. Fast and Far.

I'm a PM in a small IT shop and I despise every day: our end users are morons and my management team is sexist, rude and thinks Project Manager is a fancy word for 'secretary' since I'm not as "smart" as they are.

Most people do not know this, but it costs a lot of cash to being someone on.. so they want to make sure it is money well spent.

I took 2 pay cuts so far... hang in there.

19. Well the interview was apparently not needed. I got a call back and a quasi job offer for 10k less

than I was making at my last postion.

With this economy I have little choice but to take it since I have dependents.

The job search will have to continue after I start.

If you get the job, keep doing it and mix in some blame. You will work your way straight to the top, buy a $1000 trash bin, and be able to apply for TARP funds to buy a jet with.

20. Remember that IT is about service. Make sure that philosophy shines through in your interview.

IT has been very good to me these past eleven years. One reason I've been a success is that I've never forgotten that it's all about the customers - the end users of the technology. It makes me downright happy to help those folks. Every day.

The only excuse for the existence of my network - or the software you develop, or what-have-you - is that it facilitates the productivity of the end-users. They're not there to serve the technology. The technology is there to serve them.

Let that be your philosophy, and let it show. You'll win out over the guy whose technical expertise is a little greater than yours, but lets himself forget who and what the technology is for.
