Democracy, God's law go hand in handPete Chagnon - OneNewsNow - 1/26/2009 8:30:00 AM
The author of a new book is claiming that democracy and divine law must coexist.
David Novak is the author of In Defense of Religious Liberty (Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2009), in which he argues that society will only remain democratic as long as it protects the free exercise of religion. He explains his stance.
"Thomas Jefferson said in the Declaration of Independence we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights. How are we endowed with these rights?" Novak asks. "Well, we are endowed with these rights because we have sense that there's
certain moral norms that are universal that came from God when God created the universe and created human beings. And therefore this is a strong foundation for why these rights cannot be taken away from us -- because they are God-given."
Novak says those who work hard to remove God from society do so because they are appalled that there is a higher authority than themselves.
"And therefore if there is a higher authority, that means that everything is not permitted -- and it means that we are...subordinate but responsible creatures in the world," says the author.
Novak contends that lawmakers should not disregard what the Bible has to say about issues.
