Televangelist and “Patriot Pastor” leader Rod Parsley announced that he will be taking part in an effort to “take America back for God through the power of prayer” during the 400th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Virginia colony at Jamestown. The “Consecration Conference” at “Assembly 2007” will also feature several other familiar religious-right stars, including Pat Robertson, Bishop Wellington Boone, Harry Jackson, and John Hagee. In April of 1607, the Jamestown colony landed in Virginia Beach and planted a cross, birthing a new nation dedicated to God. Now, 400 years later, you can be part of history by uniting with Christians at the Assembly 2007 to rededicate this country to Jesus Christ.

Of course, the birth of the new nation didn’t exactly occur until late in the next century – by which time the erstwhile colonists had developed ideas like the First Amendment and the No Religious Test clause.

...I'm sure this effort will have exactly the same effect as all the other prayer-fests inflicted on Americans every year.

Absolutely none.

Millions of non-Xian Americans will not miraculously convert.

On the day after Dedication Sunday, a majority of Americans will not wake up and suddenly think it's a good idea to swap the Constitution for the Ten Commandments.

The Sainted Religious Leaders will continue to be caught in compromising positions with girls, boys and the occasional farm animal. Missionary Funds will still require an amazing number of trips to convert the godless heathens in the Caribbean and Las Vegas, NV. Etc.

It's interesting that, after nearly 2 years working in Egypt, I see exactly this same mind-set in a nation that is 95% Muslim. Just like in the U.S., the majority religion here wields an incredible amount of influence and political clout.

But despite that, the majority religionists are constantly yapping about persecution by somebody: the unbelievers, the competing religious superstitions, the Internet, and everybody's favorite demon, popular culture.

Reading some of the goofier religious experts over here, you'd think nobody ever committed an act of premarital sex until the invention of the music video.

The cure they demand is always the same, too, which is the same as this Dedication Sunday nonsense: more religion and more prayer!

Incredible. As some famous smartass whose name I've forgotten once said: "Religion is the only business in the world where the consumers blame themselves for a product failure."
