DHS has plan for new HQ in lunatic asylum

http://www.upi.com/SecurityTerrorism/dhs_has_plan_for_new_hq_in_lunatic_asylum/20070319-071725-9571r/

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is setting up its new HQ in a former lunatic asylum.

The DHS says it will consolidate most of the 60 offices it has across the Washington, D.C. region into a single new headquarters building.

The $3 billion move will begin in 2011, according to a plan prepared by the DHS, once a new building is ready in the grounds of the former mental hospital, St. Elizabeth's.

The U.S. Coast Guard will be the first element of the DHS to move into the new building in 2011, department Spokesman Larry Orluskie told United Press International.

The DHS's headquarters functions will follow in 2013, and the other components slated for centralization will move in after that.

Orluskie said that the U.S. Secret Service, the biometric system for tracking foreign visitors called U.S.-VISIT, the new Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, the Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the DHS Science and Technology Directorate will probably remain in their current locations.

a fitting home for the DHS

oh the secrets St. Elizabeth keeps.

(way back when I was driving kids and mothers to the D.C. zoo when an escaped woman from St.E. jumped off a bridge just as I was driving under it. she missed my car by a few feet. the sound of her hitting the road stayed with me for years)

5. 3 BILLION dollars???
While an insane asylum is a VERY FITTING home for DHS, I think most DHS's should all be fitted with one of these too (at the very least to keep their hands off of the American checkbook!) 3 BILLION dollars? Does anyone besides me find this sum to be somewhat, shall we say, "excessive" or even "outrageous"?

9. So if they raze all the old buildings and build new
it's gonna cost this much? How big is this new facility gonna be anyway? Do they have to file plans with the city or whatever? Three Billion is in excess of the total personnel costs for the Iraq 'war' for the entire YEAR of 2006! ($2.6 Billion to give some perspective).

The new estimated cost of building the Freedom Tower in NYC is $3 billion. In contrast, by comparison, a new state-of-the-art headquarters for Goldman Sachs under construction at a site directly across West Street from the Freedom Tower is expected to cost about $2.3 billion.

This just sounds unbelievably excessive to me. Is this consolidation even necessary? Especially at this unprecedented time of unbridled cronyism, corruption, no-bid contracts, unchecked powers, runaway deficit-spending, etc.

Sounds like more 'madness' to me.

Peace,
M_Y_H

13. I guess DHS has to keep an eye on those 'sunset celebrators'
...you know you never can trust mimes (they never say much), or people who juggle bowling balls for a living. :eyes:

What an odd place to put a DHS facility - in Key West. Although an extremely lovely place, by virtue of geography, Key West is really pretty isolated from well, most everything you'd think DHS would be concerned about. Wouldn't you agree?

15. Well, to get back on topic - 3 billion still seems excessive
(per my post #9).

Now I'm off to get some shopping done. Enjoy some of that beautiful KW weather for me (it's cool & rainy here) :hi:

8. Some interesting quotes which can apply to this HLS decision...
....."All you need to start an insane asylum is an empty room and the right type of people" -- Anonymous

....."I myself spent nine years in an insane asylum and I never had the obsession of suicide, but I know that each conversation with a psychiatrist, every morning at the time of his visit, made me want to hang myself, realizing that I would not be able to cut his throat." -- Antonin Artaud

....."The way it is now, the asylums can hold all the sane people but if we tried to shut up the insane we should run out of building materials." -- Mark Twain

16. Hehehehehe -- Carl Jung the fascists fascist with his concept of Shadow
"Fascism has awakened a sleeping world to the realities of the irrational, mystical character structure of the people of the world." — Wilhelm Reich

"You might be led to that goal by an act of grace or through a personal and honest contact with friends, or through a higher education of the mind beyond the confines of mere rationalism."
== Carl G. Jung in a letter responding to a question by Bill W. cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous <AA>

"Fascism was <is> a revolt against reason in the name of the senses."
== Stephen Eric Bronner

"All fascists are not of one mind. There are those who give the orders, and those who take them."
== Dialog from the anti-Nazi 1930s movie Watch On The Rhine, Director Herman Shumlin, Screenplay by Dashell Hammett

<snip>

The Shadow, is a psychological term introduced by the late Swiss psychiatrist, Dr. Carl G. Jung. It is everything in us that is unconscious, repressed, undeveloped and denied. These are dark rejected aspects of our being as well as light, so there is positive undeveloped potential in the Shadow that we don’t know about because anything that is unconscious, we don’t know about.

The Shadow is an archetype. And what an archetype simply means is that it is typical in consciousness for everyone. Everyone has a Shadow. This is not something that one or two people have. We all have a Shadow and a confrontation with the Shadow is essential for self awareness. We cannot learn about ourselves if we do not learn about our Shadow so therefore we are going to attract it through the mirrors of other people. <more>
