Sen. Feingold Calls For Cutting Off Iraq War Funds

January 26, 2007 3:38 p.m. EST

Julie Farby - All Headline News Staff Writer

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Outspoken war critic, Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, announced his Judiciary Committee subcommittee is exploring whether Congress has the authority to cut off funding for the U.S. military efforts in Iraq.

Feingold, who has long opposed President Bush's military venture in Iraq, has decided to take further steps to stop funding the war effort after President Bush announced his plan to send an additional 21,500 U.S. troops to Iraq.

Although Democrats and some Congressional Republicans have supported a resolution denouncing the President's new strategy to send more U.S. troops to Iraq in an effort to stabilize the increasingly violent situation, lawmakers have no real constitutional authority to stop the President.

During a speech before a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Sen. Feingold vowed to use whatever legislative power at his disposal to stop President Bush from continuing to escalate the conflict in Iraq.

3. Sadle, he's already announced his non-candidacy.
Well, only sorta sadly. He's still in the Senate, kickin' ass. And I think he might be just a little too cheeseheady to actually win.

9. Somehow I just figger nobody's gonna elect one of us
to the Presidency. We've never really had a serious candidate from this state, when you think about it. MN at least had Humphrey & Mondale. (& Gene McCarthy).

13. He looks and speaks like a President-- what's "Cheeseheady" mean?

Telegenically, he's already won.

14. "Cheesehead" is a resident of WI, so named for their deplorable
habit of wearing these yellow foam-rubber cheese shaped hats to Packers games, which in turn derives from the state's former ascendancy in dairy products, particularly cheese production.

Cheeseheads speak a "Fargo"-like dialect with phonetics and tonal patterns bearing strong Scandinavian, Canadian and German influences.

4. Feingold, Kerry stay in the Senate, Dean stays in the DNC, Pelosi stays in the House
The Democratic Party needs people at every level, not just the Presidency.

10. Nope. And that is my point. People were hating Edwards for saying it and
Feingold said it 2 weeks before.

I was just saying it cuz some people make knee jerk reactions and don't realise that their favorite candidate is taking the same stance.

12. Are we supposed to overlook here the endorsement for the President's Imperial power?
"lawmakers have no real constitutional authority to stop the President"

AFAIK (unless you tell me otherwise) that is a load of horseshit-- and presented as if it's what's in Feingold's mind: "Sen. Feingold vowed to use whatever legislative power at his disposal to stop President Bush from continuing to escalate the conflict in Iraq."

Yes he did, apparently as reported. The suggestion, immediately following "lawmakers have no real constitutional authority to stop the President" is propaganda at its finest.

Check me here if I'm wrong-- but as a coequal branch of government that holds the pursestrings and is on the verge of invoking impeachment power, this Congress DOES have "real constitutional authority to stop the President""
