Important Movies about Whistle blowers: Do you have some favorites?
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 07:10 PM by Mike 03
For whatever reason seeing "Michael Clayton" inspired me to watch Michael Mann's "The Insider" (about the cigarette industry) a couple of times this week.

These are amazing films. I guess in a way "Network" might be considered a film about a whistle blower.

Perhaps I'd include "Norma Rae," that union organization film with Sally Fields about the terrible, shameful working conditions in the textile industry.

There were also a few films about radiation and nuclear plants: "China Syndrome" and "Silkwood."

This is a great genre that has produced many marvelous motions pictures. Yet, we hear about all these other genres, but no one speaks of this group of films as a genre. Maybe this is worth thinking about.

Do you have any favorites? I'd appreciate some recommendations. These films are really inspring to me for some reason.

On Edit:

Would "Constant Gardener" qualify? Maybe that is more of a tragic detective story than the story of a Whistleblower.

1. How about "Rainmaker"? ...
It has a predatory insurance company, a whistleblower, and Danny DeVito.

3. Prince of the City
Treat Williams (no, really!) gives an outstanding performance as a cop who turns on his elite police department team. Watching him go from idealistic to cynical to outraged to falling apart is amazing. The film is ver-r-r-r-y slow, but has any number of very good performances.

4. Great one.... I have always wanted to see that.
Your suggestion reminds me of another: "American Gangster."

Definitely... Next time I place an order on Amazon, I'm getting "Prince of the City." Isn't that directed by Sidney Lumet?

12. Yep, Sidney Lumet directed
A good performance by the little short guy, I can't remember his name as the federal justice department guy who sets the investigation in motion.

5. Erin Brockovich.
Also, All The President's Men and Serpico. They all portray the real danger that the whistle blower faces.

8. Silkwood.
They filmed that near my house. Cher, Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell lived nearby for several months in some duplexes in Sherman.
They frequented local business establishments--I caught sight of them in JCPenneys.
There is NO doubt in my mind what happened here or who was at fault (Kerr McGee).

11. On The Waterfront.
Corrupt union bosses murder a whistle blower and nearly beat Brando to death. This is one of the best.
