Kurt Warner and his Holybowlers
I'm beginning to wonder if God is playing in Super Bowl XLIII, or the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers. I had avoided participating in the faith talk surrounding this Super Bowl, but after a week of Kurt Warner-carrying-his-Bible-everywhere stories, I can't help myself. I'm tired of listening to Warner and his evangelical cohorts sell Jesus to the masses.

Given that I write about the intersection of sports and religion for Praying Fields, you probably think I'd be eager to jump into the conversation. After all, God is getting more play at this Super Bowl than the credit card companies and soft drink makers that are paying big bucks to sponsor the event. As Associated Press's Tim Dahlberg wrote, it's surprising "how so many players on both teams aren't hesitating to invoke the name of God as they prepare to play a violent game where there will be no mercy shown on either side."

Having interviewed athletes about their faith during the past year, I have learned that the best way to get them to open up about their beliefs is to sit down with them for a one-on-one conversation. You can't do that at a Super Bowl media session.

2. Help me out here....
What is the relationship between religion and the Super Bowl? As someone who cares about neither, it's hard for me to make the connection. They seem to me like (1) a set of false beliefs and (2) a time-wasting spectacle. Again, what's the connection?

5. Kurt Warner and others are using the SB as
a pulpit to extol the virtues of their God. There really is no connection until people such as Warner use every moment to proselytize.

7. When They Invoke Jebus...
...bet on the other team. If his head is more into the invisible cloud being than breaking down defenses or throwing a good screen pass, he deserves to lose.

Usually I find the religious crap as mindless babble...along with a lot of the other babble these gladiators say. Face it, they didn't major in communications or poly sci. I don't care about their politics or their religion or anything else but seeing them butt heads.

I would figure if god was really on your side, wouldn't he have "smote" the opponents? Isn't that how the bible did it?

Oh well...the good news is 2 weeks to the start of Spring Training!!!!

8. I don't think God cares...
Got that right.

Reminds me of the Simpson episode with the mini-golfing tournament

Homer: (sees the Flanders' praying) It won't do any good Flanders. I already prayed that Bart would win. So it cancels out.
Ned: I was praying that nobody gets hurt.

9. Poor Philadelphia Eagles - God obviously hates your team
After Warner and the Cardinals were victorious I was shocked to learn that God wanted him to win ... I bet that makes the Eagles feel like crap knowing that God is not a fan and wanted them to lose. Seriously, don't people just see through all this BS?
